Obituary of
Weems, Leonard Andy
Leonard Andy Weems, 96, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, went home to be with his Lord on Monday, June 15, 2015. Leonard was born in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee on October 17, 1918 and graduated from Groesbeck High School in 1937. Leonard joined the US Navy on September 26, 1942 and after boot camp was assigned to the Seabees 48th Battalion and completed his service as a Petty Officer 2nd Class. Leonard received an honorable discharge on October 3, 1945. Following his service in the US Navy, he attended Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas. Leonard loved spending time with his wife Emma Jean, his four children and their spouses, sixteen grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren (with another soon to join the crew).
Leonard was a dedicated Cowboy fan, but his great joy was walking and getting some daily exercise. Leonard would visit the Farmers Branch Senior Center at least three to four times a day to walk the treadmill and later ride the bike. Only after he gave up his driver’s license was he forced to cut back to only twice a day. When greeting Leonard at the Senior Center, you might receive the reply “keep on keepin’ on” or “same song second verse” or most people’s favorite “don’t worry about the mule going blind, just load the wagon”. Leonard was known by many people in Farmers Branch and Carrollton as “Mr. Sears”. He worked at the Valley View Sears Appliance and Catalog Store in Farmers Branch for over 30 years as a trusted associate to many Carrollton and Farmers Branch residents. Some people may not be aware Leonard served in the US Navy as a Seabee in the 48th Battalion. The 48th Battalion arrived off the shores of Guam in August of 1944 during the height of the WWII. Leonard was one of twenty five Seabees out of 1700 that was selected to attach to the 3rd Marine Division in the “first wave” attack onto Guam. The beach was secured after an intense three week battle. Leonard then joined his fellow Seabees in building the air strip and base facility, eventually turning the island into the advanced headquarters for the United States Pacific Fleet.
Leonard is survived by his wife Emma Jean, his four children: Carolyn and husband Jodie Ray, Lynn and wife Mary, Pam and husband Barry Queen, Jeannie and husband Greg Buchanan, as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Leonard is preceded in death by his mother Minnie Garrett Weems, his father Andy “Tennessee” Weems and his seven brothers and sisters.
