Obituary of Shockey, Marilee Siebenmann

Marilee Siebenmann Shockey, age 86, went to be with the Lord on October 6, 2017. She passed away in Carrollton, Texas, of natural causes after battling complications related to previous strokes. Marilee was born in Jerseyville, Illinois, on July 15, 1931, and grew up in San Antonio, Texas. Marilee was the daughter of Paul Joseph Siebenmann and Bertie Anderson Siebenmann. The family served Spanish-speaking churches across Texas during the Great Depression and founded a training school known today as the Baptist University of the Américas in San Antonio, Texas, where Marilee later taught as an adult. Marilee was the oldest of three children and married James Floyd Shockey on June 9, 1951. They both attended Baylor University and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Marilee and Floyd served as Southern Baptist missionaries in inner city Chicago until 1980 when they returned to their native Texas. Marilee taught at the Baptist University of the Américas in San Antonio, then called the Hispanic Baptist Theological Seminary, and Floyd pastored several churches. Marilee spoke Spanish fluently, having learned as a child, and faithfully served Hispanic churches by teaching future pastors and church leaders at the seminary that her father founded. All who knew Marilee described her as a gifted teacher, a tireless evangelist, someone who always sought to see the perspective of others, and most of all, a loving and caring mother who demonstrated a self-giving love that challenged others to follow Christ and lead others to do the same. Together, Floyd and Marilee parented six children and fostered one child. Marilee is survived by her children; son, Jim and his wife, Grace Lyn; daughter, Jeanne; daughter, Julie and her husband, Steve Peters; son, Jerry and his wife, Lisa; daughter, Joy and her husband, Bobby McGraw; and son, Jeff. Marilee was a foster parent to Larry Johnson and his wife, Sheila. She was a gracious grandmother and prayer advocate for her ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren; Tessa, Taylor and his wife, Katelyn and son, Everett; Chris and his wife, Faith and daughter, Estelle; Cory, Andrew, Matthew, Anthony, Christopher, Samantha, and Caroline; Marilee is also survived by her brother, Paul C Siebenmann and his wife, Peggy; and sister, Lynn Barnes. There will be a visitation time with family at the North Dallas Funeral Home on Friday evening, October 13, 2017 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm, 2710 Valley View Lane, Farmers Branch, Texas 75234. Friends and family are invited to attend the funeral service that will be held at First Baptist Church Carrollton, at 2:00 pm, Saturday October 14, 2017 at 2400 N. Josey Lane, Carrollton, Texas 75006.

Marilee Shockey will be laid to rest at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery,

2000 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas.

(There will not be a formal processional to the cemetery, due to cemetery guidelines.)

The graveside service will be held on Tuesday, October 17, at 2:00 p.m.

If you plan to attend, please arrive no earlier than 1:30 and no later than 1:45.

I attended First Baptist Church in Kerrville, Texas with Marilee. I always admired Marilee because she was willing to minister to those who the rest of the world didn’t want to bother with. She had a gentle spirit and a genuine lover for people. I hope each of you in her family can take great comfort knowing she is resting in the arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She will have a great crown to throw at His feet! Well done, you good and faithful servant!

  5. Gene Anderson, San Luis Obispo, CA says:

My 1st cousin, Marilee, was a favorite cousin and friend of mine and my brother Justice from early childhood, and we spent many happy hours playing together during visits of her parents to our home in Bay City, Texas. My father, Conrad R. Anderson, was the sister of Marilee’s mother, Bertie Anderson Siebenmann. Marilee and I never lived in the same city throughout the years of our lives, but we both attended Baylor University and both felt called to some type of mission work. We somehow lost touch for many years when Marilee and Floyd went to inner city Chicago and I left for Hawaii to teach in a Baptist mission high school. A year later I met my wife, also a Baylor grad, who had come to Hawaii to teach in the public schools and help in the Baptist mission work. Nancy and I married in Hawaii, making it our home where later I taught at the University of Hawaii. It was during these years that Floyd and Marilee’s five children and our four children were born. We had the opportunity to see each other in Texas while both of us were visiting relatives but had little contact otherwise. In 1970 we moved to California where I became a professor at the California State University in Fresno. While living there, Julie called us from Bakersfield telling us that she was Marilee’s daughter and was now living in California. We became acquainted with Julie during several of her visits in Fresno. Our final opportunity to visit with Marilee came while she was visiting Julie in Bakerfield. Marilee and I both have had great adventures in life and look forward to having a big family reunion with all our relatives in our heavenly home. We are both thankful for God’s blessings and grateful for the abundant lives that He has provided for us.
