After a life of devotion to God, service to Country, and love and commitment to his family and friends, Lionel LaMoure (Lee) Winans passed away with his wife and family at his side on December 29, 2017.Ā Ā  He was born March 3, 1926, in Brownsville, Texas, to LeRoy Boorn Winans and Helen Stilwell Winans.Ā  His grandparents, Hartwell G. Stilwell and Annabelle Poole Stilwell, were Rio Grande Valley pioneers. Educated in Brownsville Public Schools, he was president of the National Honor Society and salutatorian of the graduating class of 1943. In 1943 he enlisted in the United States Navy as a seaman during World War II, entered the United States Naval Academy later in the same year, and graduated in 1946 as a member of the USNA Class of 1947.Ā  He was commissioned in 1946, and served until 1949 when he transferred to the Naval Reserve.Ā  During that time he studied engineering at The University of Texas, receiving his degree in 1951, after which was employed by Brown & Root Engineering of Houston. He married the love of his life, Carolyn Hunter of Brownsville, on July 7, 1951, and returned to active duty in the same year for service in the Korean War.Ā  During this tour of duty he was assigned to the amphibious forces, where he served until 1953, retiring as Lieutenant. After leaving the naval service he returned to Brownsville and worked as an engineer in aluminum fabrication, mechanical contracting, and building construction.Ā  He formed his own engineering company in 1958 and designed and built Empacadora de Costa Rica in Baranca, Costa Rica.Ā  Upon returning to Brownsville he owned and operated a consulting engineering practice until retirement, during which time he was involved in the engineering and construction of many landmark buildings in Brownsville, Texas. In 2009 he was recognized for outstanding service to the State of Texas as a Professional Engineer for over 50 years. Generously giving of his time and talents to his community, he served on the Brownsville Public Utilities Board, The Greater Brownsville Commission, and The Brownsville Tax Board of Equalization, and was a member of numerous building code committees.Ā  He was a board member and former drive chairman of the Brownsville United Way Fund; a member and past president of the Rotary Club of Brownsville, where he was also a Paul Harris Fellow; and a board member of the Brownsville & Rio Grande International Railroad. He also served as a board member and past president of the Brownsville Society for Crippled Children (known now as The Moody Clinic).Ā  He served on the school board for the Episcopal Day School of Brownsville as president, as treasurer, and as a facility consultant.Ā  He was a vestryman for many years at the Church of the Advent, Brownsville, where he also served many times as Junior Warden and Senior Warden.Ā  It was the church where he was married, where all of his children were baptized and confirmed, and where his two daughters were married.Ā Ā  After moving to the Dallas area in 2006, he joined Holy Nativity Episcopal Church in Plano and continued his service there at the food pantry, assisting the Boy Scouts food drive, and building sets for the children's Vacation Bible School. He was preceded in death by his mother, Helen Louise Winans; brothers Duncan Winans, LeRoy B. Winans, Jr., and Robert Reed Winans; and sister Margaret Christine Winans.Ā  He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Carolyn; two daughters, Carolee Aderhold (Cullen) of Dallas and Nanette Power (John) of Texarkana; two sons, Chester Reed Winans (Kerry) of Fort Worth and David Hunter Winans (Stacy) of Richardson; a sister, Marjorie Beard of Sugarland; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Carolyn, I send my sincerest condolences to you and your family on Lee’s passing. We have all been friends for so long I can’t remember when we weren’t acquainted. Our families grew up together through EDS, BISD and Advent. I am confident that when Lee arrived before the Golden Gates asking for “Permission to come aboard”, that he was welcomed and that he will now forever R I P.

I grew up with Lee and Carolyn’s oldest daughter Carolee and loved him as if he were my own father. I probably gave him as much trouble as his kids did but he loved me anyway. I am very thankful that he was a part of my life and I was a part of his. God bless the Winans family. Love you all.

Lee was always one of the truly good guys. I had the pleasure of growing up with his oldest daughter and, later, dealing with Lee as a professional and friend. You could always count on him to be honest, straight forward and professional. He lived by standards that few can match. I send my condolences to everyone in the family.

    Rest in Peace Lee.
I had the pleasure of knowing Lee practically all my life. He was a great role model, father, husband and friend.
We served on committees together at the Church , Day school and in Rotary. In addition, I sold him many vehicles , at times that was fun, and learned how to act like a gentleman from him and others that took the time to share. Lee was a man from the Greatest generation and will be missed.
