Goode, James William

James William Goode of Farmers Branch, passed away on January 8, 2018 after a short but courageous battle with glioblastoma. He is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Vicki Goode; four devoted children; Lyndsey Goode of New York, NY, Catherine Wick and her husband Brian of Tucson, AZ; Philip Goode and his wife Rita of Carrollton, TX; Valerie Navarro and her husband Jonathan of Colorado Springs, CO; and six grandchildren who love their Pops: Reed, Owen & Toril Ann Wick, Henry & Natalie Goode and Rudy Jameson Navarro. He is also survived by his twin sister Nancy Jean Murrah, brother Stephen Goode and double-cousins Ellen Lowe & Lindel Goode, as well as numerous in-laws, cousins, nephews and nieces that he loved well. He is preceded in death by his parents: Loren & Genetta Goode and brother Roger Goode.

He was born on February 5, 1945 and grew up in Azle, TX. He joined the Navy to serve his country & begin his dream of traveling the world, serving in Adak, AK & Bremerhaven, Germany. Upon graduating from UT Arlington, he began his career as an Electrical Engineer at General Dynamics and then spent several years onboard ship with Mobil Oil that allowed him to work on five continents & acquire two patents for seismic data acquisition. He recently retired after almost 40 years as a proud small business owner in Farmers Branch as the founder & President of Applied Data Sciences & CullerTech.

His true passion has always been education: after becoming the first member of his family to graduate from college, he devoted his adult life to making sure others had the opportunity to pursue their own education and to encourage them to never stop learning. After being an actively involved parent of four children in Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD, he was encouraged by other parents to run for school board, where he spent 18 years as a Trustee including 3 years as Board President. In addition, he served on the Board of Directors for the Texas Association of School Boards. As a proud member of the Farmers Branch Chamber of Commerce (former Chairman of the Board), he was instrumental in creating the FB Chamber Education Committee and Youth Leadership program to encourage high school students to develop the skills they’ll need to be leaders of their peers as well as in professional pursuits. He was also an occasional teacher at Prestoncrest Church of Christ, in addition to mentoring the Young Marrieds class with his wife Vicki.

Always continuing to give back to his community, he was a Texas PTA Life Member, recipient of the Community Builder Award from the Masonic Grand Lodge of Texas, Town North YMCA Volunteer of the Year, Texas Can Academy Advisory Board, and a member of the PTA Executive Board for every school his children attended in CFBISD.

James had a deep faith in the Lord and very intentionally passed that on to his children & grandchildren and always strove to show the love of Christ to everyone with whom he came in contact.

The family will receive friends for a visitation and military honors service on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm in the Brooks Family Chapel of the North Dallas Funeral Home, 2710 Valley View Lane, Farmers Branch, Texas 75234.  The military honors will be conducted at 5:30 pm.

Burial will be held on Thursday, January 11, 2018 at 11:30 am at Cottonwood Cemetery, in Jacksboro, Texas 76458.

A memorial service will be held at a date to be determined at the Prestoncrest Church of Christ, 12700 Preston Road, Dallas, Texas 75230.

Dear Vicki, Lyndsey, Catherine, Philip and Valerie,

Your family has such a special place in my heart and memories with all the help and support you gave me when I first came to Dallas in 1991. I've let too many years go by in between visits, and am truly saddened at James' passing. He was a truly great and honorable man. Praying for you all and thankful for the hope we have in Christ.

Phillip and family,

May God be with you all and ease your pain. I know this is a horrible loss but also know the greatness of Mr. Goode, simply from his reflection in Phillip.

Peace be with you today and every day going forward, knowing he will always be with you, as he is part of each family member!

Catherine and family,
As a father and grandfather, I can only say that the greatest contribution of a father is the legacy and love we leave behind. To know that we have left behind people who love us and represent the best of our lives is the greatest blessing and accomplishment in this worldly life. As much as you loved him, his pride in you will remain forever. Until your reunion in eternity, may your lives continue to pass on the love and legacy of your father.

To the Family of James Goode
From the Family of Kacie Brekhus

Mel and I thought the world of James. He was there for every Senior Walk where we presented a scholarship in Kacie's name, every school board meeting where we presented the proceeds of Kacie's Run, and every Kacie's Run since it all began. He never failed to remember Kacie to us and recall Kacie's special friendship with his daughter Valerie. He was special to us and we will remember him dearly. Our hearts go out to all of his family with love.

I've known every school board member since I was hired by the district in 1970. None were better than James. He's also, quite simply, one of the finest men I've ever known. He was my friend and my mentor on the board. It has been an honor to have served with him the last 5 years. And, I will certainly miss him at Standridge Stadium - where he attended almost every game played there.

James and I shared a brief but highly engaged journey as TASB Directors, passionately pursuing public education for Texas students. We also served on several committees together; most memorable being the Caudill Architectural Award awarded for outstanding school facilities. Certainly, James's intelligence, attention to detail, genuine personality, integrity and visionary goals were easily recognizable and to be commended. He was an inspiration! Extending heartfelt sympathy to the family and praising God for his dedicated energy and deeds wherever he was; with whomever he was with acting for the common good of all...V.Mott(Pflugerville trustee)

I knew James as a member our our "Friendship Class" at Prestoncrest. James was always quick with a smile and engaging. I will fondly remember our lengthy conversation just prior to our last Sunday class together. James' kindness and intellect will remain in my memory.

I ran into Mr. Goode a few years ago at Marshall’s BBQ. I went up and introduced myself (“Hi! You may not remember me but Lyndsey and I were in girls scouts together.”). He at least pretended to remember who I was and we had a brief but pleasant conversation. He nearly popped off all his buttons as his chest swole with pride while he filled me in on the goings on of my beloved childhood friend. I know he was as much a treasure to his family as you all were to him. His presence will surely be missed, but his legacy will continue on. My heart and prayers are with you.
