Obituary of Curtis, Rosemary Bobo

Rosemary Bobo Curtis died peacefully on January 19, 2018.  She was loved and respected by so many family and friends for her unwavering kindness, generosity, and enthusiastic passion for others.  Rosemary was born in Shelbyville, TN, on July 22, 1941, to Mr. Sam Bobo and Mrs. Isabelle Nash Bobo.  She attended Central High School in Shelbyville and studied Education at Transylvania University in Kentucky.  It was while at Transylvania that Rosemary spent a year abroad at the Institute of the Americas in Aix-en-Provence, France, a joyful experience that she recounted often.  Following college, Rosemary moved to Dallas to complete a graduate degree in Education from Southern Methodist University.  While she remained in Dallas for the rest of her life, her Tennessee roots were strong, and they pulled her back often to see family and friends and to enjoy the beautiful Tennessee countryside.  In 1967, while at a St. Patrick’s Day party in Dallas, Rosemary met the love of her life Dave Curtis whom she married in 1968.  They enjoyed a happy 49-year marriage before Dave passed away in June, 2017. Rosemary was passionate about so many things, and it was to these passions that she gave her total devotion.  She was a grade school teacher for more than 30 years, primarily at Good Shepherd Episcopal School.  She continued teaching, even in retirement, as a volunteer at Vickery Meadow Learning Center teaching ESL; as a tutor and mentor at McShan Elementary School; and as a reader, teacher, and board member at Mi Escuelita Preschool.  Rosemary was passionate about volunteering and spent countless hours serving others, whether through organized activities or on her own by simply taking meals to those in need or visiting home-bound friends.  She was recently recognized as a 2017 Volunteer of the Year by Dallas area Presbyterian Communities and Services Foundation and was awarded Volunteer of the Year at Mi Escuelita in 2010.  Rosemary loved Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church and was a devoted member for 48 years.  During that time, she served in a variety of church programs and leadership positions and embraced her role as an advocate for Christian love and service.  Rosemary and Dave were International Friendship Partners at SMU for more than 25 years, serving as a host family to innumerable foreign students.  Many of those students became family members, and they and their children brought her incredible joy.  Above all else, the foundation of her many passions was her family.  Rosemary was deeply devoted to them (near and far) and loved being a wife, mother, and grandmother. Rosemary is survived by her son Col. Sam Curtis, wife Anne Curtis, and sons David, John, and Otto William; her daughter Dr. Somer Curtis; her sister Dr. Judy Wood, husband Dr. Chad Wood, and daughter Dr. Carrie Waller; her sister Jeannie Stevens, husband Dr. Russ Stevens, and daughters Rachel Hulan and Dawn Pickett; her cousin Nancy Poston, husband James Poston; her cousin Janey Nash, daughters Anne Killebrew and Elizabeth Mooney.  She leaves behind countless other valued family and friends who were touched dearly by her life. The memorial service for Rosemary will be at 2:00 p.m. on January 26, 2018, at Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund at giving.phpc.org or to the Medical Benevolence Foundation at mbfoundation.org. Please leave the family condolences and share memories on this website.

I knew Rosemary through my years of teaching at Good Shepherd school. She was the best of teachers -kind, considerate and knowledgable. Although I was on the first floor and she was on the second, we would meet quite often. She is a very special person and I will miss her. Rosemary will always be our guiding light.
