Obituary of Hayes, Judy Ann (Michie)

Judy Ann Michie Hayes, age 84, died at her home in Dallas, TX on January 27th, 2018 of natural causes. Judy was born in Clarksburg, West Virginia to Arthur Thornton Michie and Virginia Lough Michie in 1933. She was the oldest of their five children. She grew up in Clarksburg, WV and graduated from Washington Irving High School and West Virginia University where she met her husband of 46 years, James (Jimmy) Lee Hayes, Jr. They married in 1956. Judy graduated with a degree in Education and worked as a teacher in the early years of their marriage while Jimmy was in the Air Force completing his ROTC service commitment and pilot training. She retired from teaching when they started a family. After leaving the Air Force, Jimmy’s life-long career with Eastman Kodak took the family to many U.S. cities, in the early years. While raising a family, Judy returned to college part-time when the family resided in Oklahoma City, OK and received a Master’s degree in Library Science from the University of Central Oklahoma. They finally ended up back in Dallas in 1973 and Judy resumed her career for a number of years as an elementary school librarian. Judy was a born teacher with her love of books, reading, and nurturing manner. She never met a stranger she did not like and this caring nature endeared her to her students and helped form the special bond she shared with her own children, family and many friends. Hers was a life well-lived, devoted to her family and friends. She was known for her sharp mind, high energy and general zest for life. Judy enjoyed many activities over her life such as tennis, golf, dancing, and travel, especially the annual trips to Dillon, Colorado the last 47 years for the cool high mountain summer weather she and Jimmy loved so much. She was physically active until her last day. She also enjoyed stimulating her mind and was an avid reader of books, magazines, newspapers, as well as playing bridge, mahjong, and working crossword puzzles. Judy was also an avid fan of college football and basketball and enjoyed watching all games, especially the West Virginia Mountaineers. This was an interest also shared by her childhood and life-long friend of 79 years, Jean Greer of Panama City, FL. They both enjoyed almost daily conversations discussing national politics and critiquing college sports games during the football and basketball seasons. She is survived by her daughter Susan Lynn Hayes and son James Lee Hayes III, both of Addison, TX. She is also survived by a sister Virginia (Pep) Michie Culpepper (Bruce) of Tallahassee and Tampa, FL; brothers-in-law Thomas M. Hayes (Donna) of Apex, NC and David C. Hayes of Clarksburg, WV; sister-in-law Susan Jane Hayes of Boise, ID and many nieces and nephews. Judy was preceded in death by her husband James Lee Hayes Jr., her parents, a sister Susan Michie Miller, and two brothers, Arthur Thornton Michie, Jr. and Phillip Michie. Services are private. Memorial contributions may be directed to UT Southwestern Medical Center, P.O. Box 910888, Dallas, TX 75391-0888 or online at www.utsouthwestern.edu/donatenow to support the research of Dr. Vinod Mootha.   Please leave the family condolences and share memories on this website.
