Obituary of Walrath, Howard Dale

Howard Dale Walrath, 84, passed away on Wednesday, February 28, 2018. Born December 28, 1933, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to Leonard and Dorothy Walrath. Howard served in the 1st Field Artillery Battalion in Korea, receiving the Bronze Star. He married Joanne in 1955, and attended The University of Iowa, graduating with a BS degree in electrical engineering in 1959. He briefly served as an instructor at the UI before beginning a long and distinguished career at Collins Radio.  When Collins Radio merged with Rockwell International in 1972, Howard became vice president and general manager of the C-System Division in Dallas, TX. He also led a team who invented the Automatic Call Distributor (ACD) – a development that ultimately revolutionized the call center industry worldwide. For this achievement, he received the Top Ten Telepro Award. Howard was appointed president of the Electronic Devices Division in 1977. Under his guidance, the division consolidated the semiconductor, hybrid microcircuit and circuit board units serving both domestic and international markets – doubling the sales and restoring profitability.  He retired from Rockwell in 1985 at the age of 52, to continue his passion for flying.  He built 3 experimental airplanes,  and devoted his retirement to developing and expanding residential airparks, first Airpark Dallas and then  Hidden Valley Airpark near Shady Shores, Texas.  Howard is a Life Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and a Life Member of the Experimental Aircraft Association, Chapter 168. Howard Walrath is survived by his wife Joanne, his sons Craig and Brian Walrath, his daughter in law Martha, his grandchildren Shelby and Chandler, his brother Warren Walrath and extended family members throughout Iowa. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Howard’s name to the University of Iowa School of Engineering. A Celebration of Life Service will be held March 10, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at the Town of Shady Shores Community Center, 101 South Shady Shores Road, Shady Shores, Texas 76208. Please leave the family condolences and share memories on this website.

My condolences on the loss of such an inspiring man. My dad treasured the letters he exchanged with Howard in his youth and having read some of them it was evident what a brilliant and thoughtful man Howard was.
