Obituary of Sturman, Sarah Faye (Shelby)

Sarah Faye (Shelby) Sturman passed away on Tuesday, March 13, 2018 at her home in Irving, Texas.

Sarah was born July 23, 1940 in born in Dallas, Texas to Henry and Faye Shelby. She attended Oak Cliff High where she was a member of the Golden Debs drill team.  Sarah was a legal secretary working in the legal department of Siedenburg and Valentine where she met and married her one true love, Milton (Mickey) Sturman, one of the attorneys.  They married at Temple Emanu El in Dallas on October 27, 1962 and have remained members to this day.

Sarah enjoyed making and meeting friends, and was a member of the Dallas Law Wives, Irving Law Wives, and the Red Hat Society. She was a Blue Bird leader, and a child care volunteer at Temple Emanu-El  and Baylor Hospital’s Children’s Center.

Sarah and Mickey enjoyed traveling and cruises, seeing Alaska, the Caribbean, Canada and Hawaii, as well as San Francisco, Las Vegas, and her favorite, New York City, where they saw a Broadway musical each night of their stays.

Her love and devotion to her family was unmeasured.  She enjoyed hosting family dinners and followed the school activities of her kids and her grandchildren.  Her smile and friendliness were a delight to all who knew her.  When Mickey’s mother died at a young age, Sarah insisted that her father-in-law “Pop” come live with them.  He did – for 17 years before his death at age 91.  She cared for him when he was ill, when he almost cut his finger off, and when he didn’t want to be cared for.  But Sarah always won the battle of wills and Pop would say “Babe, you do too much”.

Sarah suffered the last four years of her life with seizures and dementia, taking away her ability to speak and perform physical activities, but never took away her spirit or that beautiful smile.

Survivors include her husband Mickey, daughter Tamara Susanne Volk and husband J. Patrick, daughters Rachel Jordan and Shayna Alexandra, son Aaron Hunter Sturman and wife Teri, and their children Isaac Hunter and Madelyn Inez, and son Stephen Craig, sister Peggy Wolfe and husband Bassel, sister Patsy Ruth Sinclair and husband Bob, brother Jerry Taylor and wife Phyllis and numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins in both the Sturman and Shelby families.

A special thank you to Dr. David Deems for his outstanding care and treatment, to our devoted and loving care givers, TaMichael and Shaunise, and to our great friends, Marie and Larry Buscher, who were always there for us, 24/7.  To all these great people who made life a little easier – thank you!

In lieu of flowers, please contribute to the Dementia Society of America, www.dementiasocitey.org/donations, or mail to Dementia Society of America, POB 600, Doylestown, PA 18901.”

Graveside services will be Monday, March 19, 2018 at 1:00 pm at Temple Emanu El Cemetery, 3430 Howell Street, Dallas, Texas 75004.

Please leave the family condolences and share memories on this website.
