Obituary of Price, Thomas Lloyd

Thomas L. Price was born September 28, 1934 to Charles and Hester Price in Enid, Oklahoma, the second of eleven children. Tom came from extremely humble beginnings and liked to say “the poor called us poor”.  As such, Tom started working at an early age to help contribute to the family finances.  From delivering papers at age 8, to driving tractors on the farm, and hauling bags of flour for Pillsbury Mills, Tom always had a strong work ethic. Tom started playing the tuba in junior high and continued through his high school years. He wanted to play football, too, but injured his knee in the first quarter of his first game.  But, while Tom was recuperating in the hospital, his girlfriend at the time came to visit him and brought along a friend named Mary Cammack.  Tom and Mary eventually married on June 6, 1954. They moved to Norman, Oklahoma for Tom to attend The University of Oklahoma and Mary worked as a clerk/stenographer to put Tom through school. Finances were tight from the beginning and pancakes were a common part of the dinner menu, although they did eat a meat dish every other evening!  Prior to the birth of their first child, Sherri, they moved to Oklahoma City in 1956, where Tom enrolled at Oklahoma City University and worked full time as a bookkeeper.  He finished college in 1957, graduating with a degree in business. After graduation, Tom found a job as an underwriter with Travelers Insurance Company in Oklahoma City. Their second child, Linda, was born in 1958.  Tom was then transferred with Travelers to Dallas, Texas at the end of 1959.  He continued to work with Travelers until 1963 when one of the insurance agencies he worked with, Felix Harris & Co., asked him to come work for them.  1963 was also a big year as their third child, Randy, was born. But, after all those years of learning the insurance business and working for someone else, Tom really wanted to run his own business. So, in March 1966, with no license and no savings, Tom opened his own business – Price Insurance Agency.  First National Bank of Richardson, Texas loaned him the money to get started, he passed his state licensing exam, and Price Insurance Agency was born. Tom and Mary worked hard in those early years building the business. Their first office was in the den of their home, with Tom spending his time building relationships and selling, while Mary handled the back-office duties and typing the policies.  Eventually, they moved to their own building and Price Insurance Agency became one of the largest insurance agencies in Richardson.  In 1977, Tom got interested in the travel business and eventually started his own agency – Price Travel Service.  Running two businesses kept Tom and Mary quite busy, but they sold the insurance agency in 1984 so they could start traveling and spending more time with family and grandchildren.  They sold the travel agency in 1989. Tom was always involved in many businesses – from his beginnings in insurance and then travel, to owning and managing several properties.   He loved starting and growing businesses and his natural salesmanship skills served him well in every endeavor. Tom was also quite active as a leader in the community. He was a member of the Richardson Rotary Club from 1967 to 1989, serving as President in 1981 and was awarded the Paul Harris Fellow in 1984.  He also started the Richardson Central Rotary Club in 1979. Tom and Mary have always been active and you could find them jogging most mornings at the local high school track. They loved spending time with family and especially playing games late into the night.  They also enjoyed traveling, particularly cruises, around the world.  Tom and Mary also loved square dancing and were members of the Steeple Stepper Square Dance Club for many years, even serving as presidents for a few years. But, the most important thing in Tom’s life was his faith and trust in Jesus Christ as his savior. Tom and Mary came from very different religious backgrounds, which caused some conflict in the early years.  Tom was raised in the Assembly of God church and Mary was raised in the Presbyterian Church.  After they married, they started attending the Methodist church.  But, in 1974, they started attending a Bible-based church in Dallas named Believer’s Chapel and have been active members ever since.  It was at Believer’s Chapel that their faith really blossomed and they learned how to study the Bible and make Jesus the Lord of their lives.  This not only impacted Tom and Mary’s lives, but is also the greatest legacy of their family from their children, to grandchildren to great-grandchildren. The last few years have been a challenge for Tom and Mary. Tom was diagnosed with Lewy Body dementia in 2011 and eventually moved to a memory care facility in 2015.  Mary provided loving care for Tom on a daily basis – from feeding him meals to reading stories and Scripture.  A special thanks goes out to the staff at Arbor Hills Memory Care, Envoy Hospice and Carestaff of Dallas for their compassionate and special care they provided for Tom. Tom went home to be with the Lord on April 16, 2018. He is predeceased by his parents, Charles and Hester Price, his half-brother, Billy Price and brothers, Harold Price and David Price. Tom is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Mary Price of Richardson, Texas; eight siblings - Katrena Shaw, Martha Appel, Charles Price Jr., Alice Sparks, Grace Watters, Roy Price, Paul Price, Rebecca Price; daughter, Sherri Pope and husband, Greg Pope of Abilene, Texas; daughter, Linda Kerner and husband, Andy Kerner of Dallas, Texas; and son, Randy Price and wife, Susan Price of Tyler, Texas; 16 grandchildren –  Matthew Uselton and wife, D’Anna; Krystal Pope; Melissa Uselton; Mackenzi Price; Lindsey Pope; Madison Clark and husband, Seth; Monica Black and husband, Chris; Travis Price; Lauren LeCates and husband, Sam; Hunter Price and wife, Kyrie; Grant Price and wife, Mackenzie; Rachel Pope; Anne Marie Price; Clayton Pope; Carmen Price; Olivia Price; and 9 great-grandchildren – Cayden Hulsey, Maverick Black, Paxton LeCates, Madeline White, Presley Black, Owen Clark, Ella Clark, Thomas James (TJ) Price, Hadley Uselton. A Memorial Service will take place on Saturday, April 21, 2018  2pm at Believers Chapel, 6420 Churchill Way, Dallas, TX 75230. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Tom Price’s name to:

There aren’t enough words to express my admiration and love for Tom and Mary Price as neighbors and friends for many years in Richardson. May comfort be extended to all, knowing Tom’s earthly suffering has ended and he is in his heavenly home!
