Obituary of
Owen, Sr., Gerald Wayne
Gerald W. Owen Sr. was born in Hill County in Whitney, TX on March 10, 1938 to Orville Johnson Owen and Grace Andrews Owen. He was raised on a farm and graduated from Whitney High School in 1956. In addition to academics, Gerald was a star football and basketball player. He held the Whitney High School rushing record for nineteen years.
After completing high school, Gerald enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served for 4 years and spent most of his time working as an engineer stationed in Morocco.
Upon rejoining the civilian world, Gerald found a perfect fit with Dallas Police Department where he stayed until retirement as a Unit Commander in Hit and Run in 1992.
After retiring from the Dallas Police Department, Gerald spent the first five years enjoying the retired life, traveling the country and comprising an incredibly detailed family genealogy. Soon Gerald's desire to work connected with retired police officers doing traffic counts and providing night security at Sewell Cadillac where he worked part time/full time for about 15 years.
Gerald is preceded in death by his father and mother, Orville and Grace Owen, first wife Patricia Owen, and a great-granddaughter Addilynn Marie Polizzo.
He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Jessie Owen of Garland, his sister Peg Pevehouse and two sons Gerald W. Owen Jr. of Terrell and Todd Owen of Dallas. Gerald is survived by 4 grandchildren, Leah Owen, Courtney Owen, Ryland Owen, and Elena Owen and 4 great-grandchildren.
His family would like to honor his selfless nature by requesting donations to Liv4thecure.org in lieu of flowers.
Memorial service will be held on Friday, June 29, 2018 at 10:00 am at the Valwood Park Baptist Church 2727 Valwood Parkway, Farmers Branch, Texas 75234
Graveside services, with military honors, will be held following the memorial service at 1:15 pm at the Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas, Texas 75211.

“Big O” will be greatly missed. We have shared lots of good times. From school days when he was “Defender of the Silo” “Best Looking” and All-District running back at WHS to more recent times when we got together to reminisce about all the fun we had in the good old days.

Gerald was a good friend and classmate in the WHS class of 1956. I really enjoyed getting back together with him, Jerry, Charles, Lewis Nelson, and Alvin around Alvin’s birthday. Gerald was a great football player, friend and classmate. My condolences to the family.

Gerald was a dear friend to me from the first grade through the twelfth grade. He was such a joy to be around. A great football player and good at so many things. He was an integral part of the class of 1956 and we are all very saddened by his passing. My prayers are with the family in this time of great loss.
