Obituary of Ethridge, Marie Raiford

Marie Raiford Ethridge was born April 28, 1926, in Birmingham, Alabama, to Leola Brasher and Allen Bud Raiford. She attended the University of Alabama, Samford University and Southern Methodist University. She met Morris Ethridge when he returned to Samford after serving as an Army Air Corps Captain. They married in December 1946 and happily journeyed through life together for 68 years, until his death in 2014. Utilizing her training and gift for interior design, she worked with Morris in his custom homebuilding business for decades. They joined Park Cities Baptist Church in 1953 where they volunteered teaching children and in many other capacities. They drove together for Meals on Wheels for over 35 years. Marie enjoyed her bridge, book and dance clubs, traveling with Morris and friends, and adored her Sunday School class. Always supportive of her daughter, Deborah, Marie assisted with her Girl Scout troops, church children’s choirs, and many school organizations. Her greatest joy was being a doting grandparent to her grandson. She was beautiful, beloved and blessed. Marie passed away on August 7, 2018, and is survived by her daughter, Deborah; son-in-law, Craig Sutton; grandson, Montgomery Sutton; sister-in-law, Joan Ethridge; and her nieces, nephew and their families. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, August 13, in Ellis Chapel at Park Cities Baptist Church, with a reception to follow. Memorials may be made to her church (www.pcbc.org or PO Box 12068, Dallas, TX 75225) or any charity of choice. Please leave the family condolences and share memories on this website.

debbie, walter and i would like to express how saddened we are to hear of your mom’s passing. she was such a dear friend to glenda. your mom was such a lovely and generous person. i always admired her so because she just seemed to be the epitome of the southern lady.marie was always so thoughtful and caring of others.your mom was so kind to our boys when they were little. every year at christmas we hang the two little rocking horse ornaments with their names on them on the tree. they are a treasured gift from your mother. marie made such a positive mark on this world and on the people who were lucky enough to know her. she will be missed.
