Self, Divina Maria

Divina “Diva” Maria Self, 47, of Carrollton, Texas, passed away Thursday, September 13, 2018, due to a heart infection.

Divina was born January 27, 1971, in Dallas, Texas, to Irene Ramos Prado. She was born with congenital heart disease, and had to overcome many health obstacles throughout her life. As a child, Divina was energetic, helpful, inquisitive and precocious. Her mother called her a little tornado, and nicknamed her “flaca” (skinny). She loved to help around the house with her brothers.

Divina was a 1990 graduate of Grand Prairie High School. She attended Tarrant County College. Divina married her long-time boyfriend and high school sweetheart, Durke DeWayne Self, at a lovely outdoor wedding in 1997. Divina and Durke went on to have four children: Brandon Alexander (18, deceased), Julian Edward (15), Bella Alexandria (12), and Lauren Lynn (10).

Divina’s children were her true passion in life. When her son, Brandon Alexander, was born prematurely with health issues, she fiercely devoted herself to his care. She was a passionate advocate for Brandon, and all children with special needs. Divina was well known for her tenacity, involvement, and enthusiasm throughout the Carrollton-Farmers Branch School District.

Divina had a large and diverse group of friends. She was famous for her exuberant, happy, and sometimes crazy personality. She was known as “Diva”, a nickname she always proudly displayed on her car.

Divina was a long-time member of Mary Immaculate Catholic Church in Farmers Branch. She was passionate about volunteering and gave her time to MetroCrest Services and Christ 4 Kids Sack Summer Hunger. Divina worked in Pre-K Religious Education at Mary Immaculate, alongside her son Brandon.

Divina is survived by her husband, Durke Self, and children, Julian, Bella, and Lauren of Carrollton, Texas; parents Irene and Roberto Prado of Joshua, Texas; brothers Robert Prado and Marcos Prado; and grandmother Beatrize Prado. She is preceded in death by son Brandon Alexander Self, who passed away November 13, 2017; grandparents Juanita and Emilio Ramos; and grandfather Roberto Prado.

A viewing will be held from 2:00 to 6:00 pm, with a Rosary at 4:00 pm, on Sunday, September 16, at the North Dallas Funeral Home, 2710 Valley View Lane, Dallas, Texas. Funeral Mass will be said at 2:00 pm, Monday, September 17, Mary Immaculate Catholic Church, 2800 Valwood Parkway, Farmers Branch, Texas.

A memorial donation fund has been set up at gofundme.com, Divina Self Memorial Fund.

“Oh, how precious time is! Blessed are those who know how to make good use of it. Oh, if only all could understand how precious time is, undoubtedly everyone would do his best to spend it in a praiseworthy manner!”  – St Pio of Pietrelcina

The memories from school and GEEPETTES and the time you stayed with us are some of my fondest memories, Diva. My prayers and love to you Durke, and those three beautiful kids. The courage she had all her life to fight through in spite of constant health issues and that big bright smile will be misses but never forgotten.

Durke and Divina - We only shared one year of high school together, but what a fun year you two made it!

To Durke and family, please accept my deepest condolences. I pray that God will wrap his arms around each of you and you will feel His comforting presence and grace during this time.
