Obituary of Crohn, Ellyn Driss

Ellyn Driss Crohn, age 82, of Austin, TX, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on October 8th, 2018 after a brief but brave battle with pancreatic cancer. Ellyn (Gram El) was born on March 31st, 1936 in Chicago, Ill. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Norman “Buddy” Crohn and her parents, Milton and Sally Driss. Ellyn moved to Bryan, TX at an early age, and then moved to Dallas, TX attending Highland Park High School. It is here that she met Buddy, and on December 26th, 1954, they were wed. Together, they had two sons and one daughter. Ellyn and Buddy enjoyed traveling together as well as spending time with family and friends. Ellyn was often found taking trips with her friends to Las Vegas, where she just enjoyed playing slot machines, and most times, they were very good to her! She is survived by their children Andy and Susannah Crohn, Shari and Brian Klein, and Howard Crohn and Lori Droppo. She is also survived by her older brother and sister in law, Reese and wife Marlene Dross of New Mexico. Ellyn and Buddy have 6 grandchildren, Matthew, Seth, Kendall, Lauren, Asher, and Normandy (K.C. Grimes); and nieces Barbara and Philip Einsohn, Mindy Berger and Terri Hill, and nephew Steve and Liz Berger. She is also survived by her sister in law, Helaine Trachtenberg. Ellyn followed Buddy as he was transferred from city to city for his work. It wasn’t easy to keep enrolling young children in so many different schools, but she did it with grace and strength. Ellyn was the rock that held the family together in times of challenge. Quick witted, she always had a smile, a laugh, or shared perspective to not take things too seriously. Those that knew her never had a negative thing to say about Ellyn. She will be remembered mostly by the hand-made blankets she made for each grandchild, every practice, game, or school play she attended for her children and grandchildren, and for being the most prepared and organized person ever known. Everyone consistently received their birthday card or Hanukah gift, and it was always there two days early. Her family and friends will live with her in our hearts and she will continue to guide us all to be together, have fun, and enjoy life. Graveside services will be held at Sparkman – Hillcrest Cemetery on Thursday, October 11, 2018 at 10:00 am. Please leave condolences for the family and share memories on this website.

I was sad to learn of Ellyn’s passing. It’s been many years since I’ve seen this side of the family. Probably since Aunt Sally passed. Wishing you all a heart felt condolence.
