Obituary of Nipp, Charles E.

Charles Edwin Nipp was born in Snyder, Texas on June 25, 1930, to James and Mary Elizabeth Nipp. James was a mechanic and Mary was a devoted wife, talented nurse and a deeply religious Southern Baptist. Charles had an older brother named Jimmy. As a young boy, Charles developed Scarlett fever which left him deaf in one ear. In the early 1930’s, the family moved to Dallas in search of more work opportunities as it was the Great Depression era. Charles grew up in Dallas and, as a young child, developed a passion for reading and for animals – two great loves that would continue throughout his life. Those two loves served as an important refuge for the young Charles whose parents broke up when he was six years old. His childhood was difficult, and times were hard for his single mother, but Charles was greatly loved. Charles attended W H Adamson High School in Oak Cliff and eventually enrolled at the University of Texas. He worked his way through school and received a scholarship to study in Mexico City where he became fluent in Spanish. He was an excellent student and, in 1957, Charles graduated Phi Beta Kappa with honors with a BA in Anthropology from the University of Texas at Austin. In the early 1960’s, Charles was briefly married and had a daughter named Gloria. In 1969, as a single man, he placed an ad in a magazine in Mexico stating that he was looking for a Mexican wife. That ad was answered by Raquel Carnero, who was a young CPA living in Monterrey, Mexico with a toddler daughter named Cecilia Margarita. The two began writing each other frequently and soon they were engaged. They married in July of 1970 and Raquel and Cecilia moved to the USA. The family stayed close to Mama Nipp, Charles’ mother. A very traumatic and difficult period occurred for Charles when his mother was killed in 1976. Eventually, through much prayer and painful soul-searching, Charles forgave the man who murdered his mother. Their story was featured in the Dallas Morning News and in a book called Transcending; Stories of Crime Victims. Charles converted to Catholicism in the early 70’s and was a very devoted and faithful Catholic throughout the remainder of his life. He volunteered for Pro-Life organizations and he particularly enjoyed attending Mass in Latin. Nevertheless, he always maintained his love of traditional Southern Baptist church hymns which reminded him of his dear mother. Occasionally he would say things like, “That’s a star in my crown” as a throw-back to his childhood. Charles was always more interested in reading and writing than in sales and marketing. However, with Raquel’s encouragement, he soon began a successful career in sales. In the 1970’s, he was a top salesman for Regents Publishing Company, a textbook company. He eventually worked for Prentice Hall Publishing where he developed important and life-long friendships. In 1983, he was rewarded with a trip to Paris for his excellent sales record. However, much to the astonishment of his French bosses, Charles asked if he could instead go to Madrid as he had always dreamed of going to Spain. Charles and Raquel enjoyed a magnificent week in Spain, one of the highlights of their years together. During the 1980’s, Charles and Raquel grew their family and they adopted Ana Maria and Pablo. Now the family was complete. Charles and Raquel were very active in Church activities such as Marriage Encounter and even helped begin Masses in Spanish at Mary Immaculate Church. Charles was happy to retire from corporate life in 1995 which left him time for his numerus interests and hobbles. He continued to read prolifically and volunteered with Kittico (now Dallas Cat Lady) to save feral cats and with a Hospice organization serving people with HIV / AIDs. He was a true voice for voiceless animals and his commitment to animal welfare led him to become a vegetarian and later a vegan. In fact, the Nipp Family house became a certified cat sanctuary where as many as 14 cats lived at one time. In his last years, Charles suffered from Parkinson’s Disease and dementia. However, the Nipp family was blessed in that he always recognized each family member and he was able to express his love for each one until the very last day of his life. Charles Nipp died peacefully on January 1, 2019 in the company of his beloved family and in the loving arms of his devoted wife, Raquel. We will always miss his intellect, quick wit and sense of humor. We take comfort in his peaceful departure and in the knowledge that he is in Heaven with many loved ones and many beloved pets. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Charles E Nipp to Dallas Cat Lady or to your favorite animal rescue organization. IMG_2161IMG_2158IMG_2159Daddy 2Daddy 1

I was so sad to hear that we lost Charles. His dedication to animals was touching. It involved not only cats and dogs, but raccoons too. I remember for some time a racoon would share the cat’s food. His and Raquel’s story was quite amazing.
