Obituary

Betty Ann Arnold Dodd lived a devoted, loving, and faithful life. As the cherished only child of Harold and Eoline Arnold born on April 12, 1939, in Sulphur Springs, Texas, she spent her idyllic childhood surrounded by grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Betty enjoyed being involved in church, school, band, and the Hi-King Klub.

After graduating from Sulphur Springs High School in 1957, Betty attended East Texas State University (now East Texas A&M University) in Commerce, Texas. During college, she was in the Tooanooa Social Club and the Home Economics Society. She obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics and a teaching certificate. Betty taught in Tyler, Boude Story Middle School in the Dallas I.S.D., and a preschool.

While at East Texas State, Betty met John David Dodd, the love of her life, and they were married on August 19, 1962, at First United Methodist Church Sulphur Springs. Betty found her true calling as John's wife for over 63 years, Angela and David's mother, and an adored grandmother.

She volunteered countless hours at her children's schools (Cabell Elementary, Good Shepherd Episcopal School and W.T. White High School), church, civic organizations and boards. She was active in The Civic League (49-year member), Farmers Branch Woman's Club, Northhaven Garden Club, Preston West Republican Women and other Republican Clubs. Betty and John were members of Webb Chapel UMC, Chapel Hill UMC, and most recently First United Methodist Church, Dallas. They also attended First United Methodist Church Sulphur Springs.

Betty and John led a very active life and represented the community during John's terms as Mayor of Farmers Branch and a member of the Dallas ISD School Board, including attending presidential and gubernatorial inaugurations and dinners, and having tea with Queen Elizabeth II as members of a Farmers Branch Delegation promoting the Sister City relationship with Bassetlaw, England. They also enjoyed traveling with friends and family to Colorado, Florida, Europe, Israel, Africa, and many other locations.

Throughout her life, Sulphur Springs remained one of Betty's favorite places in the world. Betty enjoyed spending time at their Lake Elberta cottage.

She passed away on January 26, 2026. Betty is survived by her husband John, son David, daughter Angela Miller McConnell (Jim), beloved grandchildren: Matthew Miller (Caroline), Nathan Miller, Andrew Miller (Ashley), Justin Dodd, and Caroline Dodd, great grandchildren: Savon'Tae, Jack, Nolan, Eden, Christian, and William Miller, brother-in-law Wayne Sheppard, and the Pond and Sheppard nieces and nephews.
