She was born July 13, 1917 in Birmingham, Alabama to Mr. & Mrs. Robert Lee and Tallulah Pearl Hughey Burgess. She was a 3rd generation Alabaman. The line of Burgess Genealogy came from England in the early 1600s, they settled in Massachusetts and moved to Virginia and southward to Alabama in later years. She graduated Cleburne county High School in the Class of 1934 in Heflin, Alabama. She received a Bachelors of Sciences Degree from Jacksonville State University, Jacksonville, Alabama. She received a Master of Art
