Obituary

Charles Ellis Walpole

May 30, 1938 - August 30, 2024

Charles came into this world at Methodist Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, and left it at Texas Health/Presbyterian Hospital, in Dallas, Texas. He is predeceased by his beloved parents, Charlie and Bonnie Ellis Walpole, who were born and raised in the McKenzie, Tennessee area. They resided in Memphis for the majority of their life together.

He is survived by his wife, Joni Chambers Walpole (married December 30, 1971) and son, John Charles (Trey) Walpole.

He spent his school years in Memphis where he graduated from Central High School in 1956. His B.A. (chemical engineering) was achieved at Rice in Houston, Texas. Continuing his education he received a law degree from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.

Charles's legal career path took him to Alabama, Missouri, Tennessee, and Texas. A move to Birmingham, Alabama proved fortunate because that is where he met Joni. Many years were spent as a corporate attorney for Holiday Inn when the company headquarters was located in Memphis. While in the Fox Meadows area of Memphis, the family was active at Asbury United Methodist Church. Soon a move to Irving, Texas, brought him to the Brock Hotel Group and to Plymouth Park United Methodist Church. Before officially retiring he was a legal consultant and also worked for the RTC for a short time.

He liked to attend local theater, especially when his son was in the cast. As an exceptional photographer he loved planning trips and shooting the sights through his camera lenses. He and Joni took many "birding" trips often adding first time sighted birds to their life list. Retirement was welcomed during which he enjoyed reading, birding, fishing and watching movies.

Charles was a gentle, sweet soul filling any space he occupied with his impressive presence. He will be missed.
