Obituary

On February 13, 2019, Albert Joe Clark, age 92, went home to be with his passed away and Savior and to be reunited with his wife, Anna Ruth Noell Clark, his father, mother, four brothers and two sisters. In August, 1926, Joe was born in Marshall, Texas, to Algerene L. Clark and Ota Pearl Rutland. Joe was third child of nine children. He loved his mother, father, brothers and sisters all his life. He graduated from Mt. Vernon High School where he played football in the early 1940s. That began his life-long love of the sport. During high school, he sat out a year to work on a pipeline crew to support the family because his father [our Granddaddy] had sustained a work injury. Joe finished high school with classmate, Betty Hasty, who became his older brothers wife in 1944.After high school, in 1942, Joe began his railroad 44 year career with the St. Louis Southwestern Railroad The Cotton Belt. He started as a clerk and telegraph operator sending Morse code messages between the many stations he worked all through north Texas and the train dispatchers office. In 1950, Joe entered the U.S. Navy. While on leave, his younger brother, Ray, introduced him to Ruth Noell. In May 1952, Joe and Ruth were married. A year later, they had their first son, Robert Joe Clark. For at time, Joe and Ruth were stationed in San Diego, which was a dream location for them. In May 1954, Joes Navy tour ended with an honorable discharge having served as a teleman on destroyer, the USS DeHaven, in the Korean Conflict. After the Navy, Joe returned to the railroad. In 1955, their second son, Ronald Clark, was born. Ruth and Joe had their family and Joe progressed through the ranks in railroad operations. His jobs were telegraph operator, agent, train dispatcher, chief train dispatcher, trainmaster, terminal superintendent, and rules and training officer. Joe and his family were transferred many times along the Cotton Belt/SP line - Tyler, Texas, Pine Bluff, Arkansas, East St. Louis/Belleville, Illinois, Memphis, Tennessee, Camden, Arkansas, Pine Bluff, Arkansas, and Eugene, Oregon. His final station was in Pine Bluff when he retired in the fall of 1986.In 1989, he and Ruth moved to San Antonio, Texas, to be near their first grandchild, Paige. The next year their second granddaughter, Jordan was born. Joe was an excellent grandpa [Grandy Joe] doing day care and babysitting with Ruth, driving the girls to pre-school and having to be first in line for pick-up. Joe also spent time on the golf course for a weekly round of golf with Ron. He taught his granddaughters how to play golf, let them drive the car, attended their youth sporting events and school plays. Also, Joe and Ruth traveled often to visit Robert and his wife. Robert was a long time railroader following in Joes footstep. And, speaking of foot-steps, Joe was known on the railroad as Big Foot not only for his height and size but his trade mark number 12 wing tip shoes. He was loved and respected by all that worked with him. Joe had many fun railroad memories and considered the railroad part of his family as well.Visitationis on Tuesday, February 19, at 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.at North Dallas Funeral Home,2710 Valley View Lane, Dallas, Texas(Farmers Branch) 75234.A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, February 20 at 10:30 a.m.at Webb Chapel Cemetery,12501 Webb Chapel Road, Farmers Branch, Texas.Joe was preceded in death by Anna Ruth Noell, his wife of 63 years, his dearly loved parents, Algerene L.
