T. Peter Doremus Jr passed away peacefully after a long illness, surrounded by his loving and devoted children on Tuesday January 1, 2013 at Methodist Dallas Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. Peter was born in Red Bank, NJ on February 2, 1928 to Thomas P. Doremus Sr and Katharine Allaire (McDonald). He was graduated from Blair Academy in 1948. An accomplished athlete, he earned varsity letters repeatedly for Track and Field, Swimming, and Football. At Colgate University, Hamilton, NY he was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree in both English and Spanish. A promising career in football was cut short by injury. However, athletics was a major theme throughout his life. Peter enthusiastically coordinated the Ford Motor Company 'Punt, Pass and Kick' Tournaments for Monmouth County, NJ for years, and was an active participant and volunteer for the local YMCA. Peter owned and operated Doremus Ford, a successful dealership in Shrewsbury, NJ, one of a small number of automobile agencies that survived the first oil crisis in the 1970's. He sold the business in (19__?). Peter thoroughly enjoyed an early and lengthy retirement perfecting his golf game, his principle hobby and sport. He was an avid fisherman, who custom made carbon and fiberglass fishing rods for himself and his fisherman friends. A tinkerer in arts and crafts, Peter was a gifted photographer, skilled furniture maker and wood worker, and wood carver - he could putter in his wood shop for hours. He loved learning new computer skills, and was happy to replace his SLR camera equipment with digital photography programs. Peter is one of so few individuals who are solid and honor-bound; a man who lived by his heart and unwaivering vaules, expecting nothing in return, not even thanks. In spirit, he will always be in our lives and in our hearts as a dear person who did the right thing because it is right, and he always did it with love. Peter was predeceased by his beloved wife, Tora Ueland, Rumson, NJ in 1988, his sister, Katharine Allaire Doremus Paulus, Pleasant Valley, PA in 1996. He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Jo Ann Neal Cleaver Doremus, Dallas, TX; his children and grandchildren: Sara Doremus Trimmer, Hanover, NH, and her children Andrew and Katharine; Katie Doremus Halsey of Shelburne, VT, and her children Stephen and Kirsten; and Peter Thomas Doremus, Ridgefield, CT, and his children Grace and Isabel.
