Earl Alton
Curry
August 11, 1939 – April 20, 2024
Earl Alton Curry Jr. was born on August 11th, 1939, in Cincinnati, Ohio to Earl and Grace Curry. There was a seven-year difference between Earl's older sister Joan, so he was doted on by everyone. Also, because both sets of grandparents lived nearby.
He had wonderful stories about his happy and busy childhood so much, so he earned the nickname "Jitty" which his family and close friends still called him. He did odd jobs with his grandfather which made him strong and set pins and ran groceries which gave him that entrepreneurial spirit early in life. He loved his best and lifelong friend Mitchell, who was his champion, partner in business, and his voice of reason. He also loved to fight. This passion ended up having him having to go with his cousins in Chicago, including his favorite cousin Robert, which, he credited that move to saving his life. Boxing, sports, and fitness became lifelong passions that won him awards in school and in the military. Earl became a father while still in high school to his first son who everyone affectionally called Bambi.
He joined the Army and became a paratrooper for the 101st Airborne company, stating he liked the jumps, but he did it for the extra money he received for each one. He then used his GI Army bill to become the "Old man" on campus and meet his other lifelong friend Barbara who supported him, his businesses, his family, and children throughout his entire life. Earl moved to the NYC area and settled in Jersey City, New Jersey, living there for over 45 years. He went on to work for an elevator company, he was a vendor in NYC, and he owned his own bar, the Mark IV Lavender Lounge with everyone's favorite bartender Silvia and her sister.
He worked for the NJ Boxing commission, timekeeping. He had his stints in acting. You can catch a glimpse of him in a few movies. However, one thing that was more important to him than anything else was his family. He hardly ever missed a birthday or a chance to brag about everyone's many accomplishments. He was devastated by multiple early losses of his father Earl, grandson Ajay, youngest son Mel and eldest son Garry, all to heart related deaths so he made sure he kept good communication with all his people. In his later years he spent most days talking to his lady friend Jackie while complimenting her on her cooking and making her laugh. He had a host of children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren including his son Ron (Yuna), daughters Tracye (Julian), Sarahgrace, Ivygail(Rahsaan), and loving stepson Corey. Grandchildren includes: Cloren, Morgan, Dakota, Roman, Rachelle, Ajay, Ashlee, Myles, Torrey, Amanda, Hannah, Micah, Jared, Tyler, Glorianna, Rahsaan Jr., Ellis, Logan, and Kellan. He has a host of great grands as well.
As his friend said well, "Earl was a man whose presence was as steadfast as the roots that anchored a giant oak tree. He had strong opinions about everything and was not shy about expressing them. Each thought was etched with conviction. Sometimes with a warmth that softened even the sharpest edges, then sometimes with the vengeance of a mighty sword. "
You could Hate him fervently and love him endlessly at the same time. He had many loves and many lives. He was beautiful, he loved the word NO, and He did it his way.
