James Paul "Jim" Hargis passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 11, 2013, in Dallas, TX.Born in Lubbock, TX, on August 17, 1931, Jim is the son of the late Jack and Jessie Hargis. He was raised in Denver, Colorado, where he attended South High School. When Jim was 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He trained at Camp Pendleton and was soon shipped out to Pusan, Korean, as the Korean War began. He served heroically with the 1st Marine Division under Genral Douglas MacArthur. In November of 1950, Jim fought in the epic battle at the Chosen Reservoir where the outnumbered Marines encountered heavy losses and yet effectively defeated the opposing forces. Jim suffered frostbite to his hands and feet and was evaucated and treated at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Japan. Upon his return to the United States, he was promoted to Corporal and spent the remainder of his service with the Marines at Camp Lejeune. Jim was a proud member of the survivors of this battle, know as the "Chosen Few", and counted many of these men among his close, lifetime friends.In 1954, Jim moved to Dallas and joined the Dallas Police Department as a patrolman. He was promoted to detective in 1959, the youngest officer ever appointed to that position. As a member of the "Bunko" division, he handled fraud, assaults, forgeries, and had several encounters with Jack Ruby. In 1968, Jim made lieutenant and became watch commander at Northwest Station. He worked for the Dallas Police Department for 32 years, retiring in 1986. After his retirement, Jim worked as a private detective in Dallas and traveled extensively.Jim enjoyed the freindships of many ex-Dallas policemen and Korean War veterans. A 32nd degree Freemason and a Shriner, he was a member of the Hella Temple and enjoyed volunteering at Scottish Rite Hospital for Children.Jim Hargis loved God, his Country, the Marines, and his family. He is survived by his children, Vanessa Hargis Sendukas of Houston, TX and Jack Victor Hargis of Huntington Beach, California; his grandchildren, Alexa Sendukas, Zachary Sendukas and Austin Paul Hargis; his brother, Kenneth Hargis of Wilcox, Nebraska; and his sister, Pat Lambert of Searcy, Arkansas. Jim is also survived by his fiancee, Nancy Steele.Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, June 17, 2013, in the Brooks Family Chapel at North Dallas Funeral Home, 2710 Valley View Lane, Farmers Branch, TX.Funeral: 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 18, 2013, at Northwest Bible Church, 8505 Douglas Avenue, Dallas, TX.
