James Peter
Swabb
November 7, 1932 – December 14, 2024
James Peter Swabb, age 92, passed away to join His Heavenly Father on December 14, 2024.
Jim was born on November 7, 1932, in Arkansas City, Kansas, to parents Cecil Merle Swabb and Pearle Forbeck Swabb Dodson and siblings C.M., Don, and Sandy. His parents were later divorced, and the loving step-parents, Leona and Bill, were added to his family, including siblings Mary Ann and Danny Joe. Jim grew up in his beloved Oklahoma and moved to Illinois during high school, where he scored the buzzer-winning shot for the Illinois State Basketball Championship. After high school, Jim joined the United States Air Force, proudly serving in Japan during the Korean War. Jim returned home to work as a teacher, camp director, and church leader before pursuing his Masters Degree in Social Work.
Jim worked as a licensed social worker in the Minneapolis School District and for Hennepin County in Minneapolis, Minnesota, until retirement. During this time, he worked with persons who were developmentally delayed and those who were deaf and hard of hearing, using sign language to communicate. He initiated the first Alcoholics Anonymous for the hearing impaired in the area. He also continued to give his time to serving the church after becoming an ordained minister and Moderator for the Southern Baptist Convention of Churches in Minnesota, working as an interim pastor and church planter in his community. Jim married the love of his life, Joan Lenore Foss, in 1964, and the two settled in Minneapolis to raise two daughters, Marnie and Wendy.
Jim was passionate about helping others and supporting those in need, and he has left a legacy of kindness and compassion for his family to emulate. He enjoyed fishing, basketball, Westerns, and sharing his love for the Bible.
Jim is survived by his wife, Joan Swabb, daughters, Marnie Stone and Wendy Gammello, and four grandchildren, Amy Williams (Jaxon), Grace Eng (Jared), Corrie Stone, and Giano Gammello, as well as his sister Mary Ann Merkey (Dan) and many beloved nephews and nieces. Jim, loving father and grandfather, will be greatly missed.
A funeral service will be held at Dallas National Cemetery on December 27, 2024, at 10:00 am.
