Obituary

LaVada Joy Barrett, age 93, passed away peacefully on June 27, 2025, surrounded by the love of her family. She was born on December 1, 1931, in Bronte, Texas, near Abilene — a place that always held her heart.

LaVada Joy was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Schley Gibbs Barrett Jr. He passed away 35 years ago, and it brings the family great peace knowing they have been reunited in Heaven.

Her memory will be cherished, and her stories shared often by those who survive her. She was lovingly known as "Mom" to her daughter, Suzanne Stolle (husband Rick), and son, George Barrett (wife Katie). She was "Nanny" to her granddaughters, Jennifer and Elizabeth (husband Jimmy), Kathryn, and to her great-granddaughters, Caroline and Madeline. She was proudly known as "Nana" to her granddaughter, Grace.

LaVada Joy and her husband, Schley, moved to the Dallas area and settled into a home in Richardson, Texas, in 1972. They were fortunate to form close friendships with many families in the Canyon Creek neighborhood. These dear friends became like family as they raised their children together. She and her family spent countless hours at Canyon Creek Country Club, where she enjoyed playing tennis. She was also an avid bridge player, a member of numerous bridge groups, and often played at bridge studios over the years.

She began working at Neiman Marcus in 1979 and thoroughly enjoyed her time there. She was promoted to management not long into her career. LaVada Joy set a high standard for hard work, dedication, and an exceptional work ethic, consistently maintaining a positive attitude.

She was renowned for her kindness and gentle, caring nature. She always said, "Pay kindness forward" — something she truly lived by every day of her life.

Friends and family are invited to her Memorial Service at Lake Highlands United Methodist Church, 9015 Plano Rd, Dallas, Texas 75238, at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 12, 2025. A reception will follow the service in the Narthex outside the Sanctuary.
