Obituary

Mary Kathryn Mox, 86, was born on August 3, 1940, in Lewisville, Texas, the first child of D.C. Meek, a sharecropper, and his wife Ocie Meek. Mary was welcomed into the arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, September 23, 2026.

She is survived by her sister Evelyn Kay and niece Amy Kay, two daughters Louisa Mox and Dale Graham, son-in-law Paul Graham, grandson Mark Hoelscher and wife Elle, granddaughter Madeline Mangan and husband Daniel, great grandchildren Lenny Hoelscher, Lucy and Brigid Mangan and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Mox, as well as her parents D.C. and Ocie Meek of Carrollton, TX.

Mary, the eldest of 2 children, began life in the rural farming town of Lewisville, TX. As a very young child she would ride on the end of a cotton sack while her mother picked cotton. The little house she lived in had dirt floors that her mother swept “clean” every day. The gaps under the walls were large enough for a good sized snake to get through but by the time she graduated from Carrollton High School and began attending business school the family was living in a sturdy brick home. Mary worked at Abbott Labs before having children. Her hobbies included reading both the Bible and fiction. Her favorite authors were John Steinbeck, Somerset Maugham and Marjorie Sharp. She was very artistic and took up oil painting in the 1970s. One of the first classes she enrolled in was an advanced class. The teacher cautioned her that the pace would not be slowed for one student. Mary took the class, but later admitted that during class she would paint awhile, go in the bathroom to cry awhile, and then come out and paint some more. We have many paintings now as a result of her persistence.

In her retirement years she and her sister cared for their aging parents. She also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, going to the senior center, taking walks, cooking, and serving as weight recorder at her TOPS club. She helped out with the Field City reunions and especially enjoyed making a centerpiece covered with old photos for the event. She and her husband spent many hours playing computer games together, solving puzzles and mysteries. Mary attended Northside Baptist Church in her later years until she was no longer able to get out. After that she would watch the services on TV. She was a kind and gentle woman who loved her family with a selflessness that only a mother could possess. People always seemed to comment on her beautiful eyes, those eyes always saw the best in people, and her loyalty was steadfast. She will be deeply missed.

Family will receive friends on Friday, October 2nd from 6-8 pm at Northside Baptist Church. The service will be held at the same location at 11:00 am on Saturday, October 3rd. From there, funeral events will proceed to Hilltop Memorial Cemetery with a butterfly release graveside, weather permitting.
