Carol Ann (Fletcher) McDaniel, age 67, passed away at her home in Carrollton, Texas, on April 1, 2012. Carol was a twenty year survivor of breast cancer.Carol was born in Taylor, Texas, on March 15, 1945, to Arnold and Euna Fern Fletcher, the second of three children. She is survived by her son, Matthew McDaniel; his father, Charles B. McDaniel; her mother; her brother, Edward Fletcher and his wife, Annie; her sister-in-law, Carol Fletcher; her cherished nieces and nephews; many dear friends; and hundreds of parents and children who remember her as the "best teacher I ever had". She was preceded in death by her father and her brother, James R. Fletcher.Carol grew up in the Houston area and attended Texas Women's University before graduating from the University of Houston. She spent her adult life teaching children how to learn, especially those who struggled to read, and how to live the rest of their lives. She started her teaching career in Tucson, Arizona where she completed a Masters of Education degree in Reading and taught elementary students in the Austin, El Paso, Houston and Dallas areas until she retired. After retirement she continued on, training others to use new assessment tools in their classrooms. She made friends easily and treasured her friends. Even on her hardest days Carol could find joy. She reveled in others successes, and if success was elusive she provided encouragement.Carol said goodbye to many of her friends at her recent birthday party. Now we will replace the joy of her presence with our joyous memories of her. There will be a private memorial service at a later date.
