MILLER, J. ARTHUR, JR, 94, of Dallas, Texas. Born November 15, 1920 in Houston, Texas, son of James Arthur Miller, Sr. and Mable Tate Miller, passed away May 28, 2015 at Texas Health Resources Presbyterian Hospital, Dallas, Texas. J. Arthur "Art" Miller graduated from Lamar High School, Houston, Texas, and attended the University of Houston. He was a retired American Airlines Pilot. His love of all things aviation began at a very young age, starting his pilot training as a teenager. He was one of the first students to complete the Civilian Pilot Training Program in Houston commerical pilot and flight instructor credentials. While in the U.S. Army Reserve during World War II, he became a civilan flight instructor for the Army Air Corps and was stationed in Quero, Texas. In 1943, when the demand for military pilots waned, an army pal suggested they talk to American Airlines about flying jobs, an idea he thought impossible due to their commitment to the Service. Fortunately, his commanding officer allowed them the time to go to Fort Worth and interview with the airline. Art enjoyed a wonderful career at American Airlines that spanned nearly 37 years and accumulated over 27,000 hours, flying equipment from the Douglas DC-3 and retiring Captain of the Boeing 747. He particulary enjoyed flying to Mexico and was very well respected by his peers. Art owned several airplanes and continued teaching students privately in his aircraft. After retiring in 1980, he bacame a glider pilot and spent many years judging aerobatic flying contests in both powered aircraft and gliders. He was a member of the Dallas Banjo Band, the Experimental Aircraft Association, Antique Aircraft Association, International Aerobatic Club, Grey Eagles, Sportsman Pilots Association, and Quiet Birdmen. He was also an amateur astronomer and benefactor of the Univeristy of Texas McDonald Observatory in Fort Davis, Texas, as well as the Frontiers of Flight Museum in Dallas, Texas. He was a member of St. Matthias Church and is survived by his wife, Barbara O'Brian Brister Miller, sons James Arthur "Jimmy" Miller, III, Glen Tate Miller (and Sharon Leftwich Miller), and Henry Christopher Miller, daughter Linda Miller Coffin (and Donald Craig Coffin), brother Boyd K. "Putt" Miller (and Beverly Miller), and sister Jean Miller Collins, as well as ten grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
