Obituary

Richard Karl Miller passed away on December 19, 2019 at the age of 96. A memorial service and mass will be held at Mary Immaculate Catholic Church, Farmers Branch, Texas on January 3, 2020 at 1:00 PM.Richard was born in Trenton, New Jersey to Richard and Alice Kelty Miller. He enlisted as an aviation cadet in October of 1943. Richard flew for his country in Korea and Vietnam. He received numerous commendations and medals including the Distinguished Flying Cross, Purple Heart, WWII Victory Medal and UN Service Medal. Richard flew 61 combat missions in Korea and loved the thrill of the action. He was fearless and daring. In 1947, he was chosen to be one of the first 20 to be trained to fly the F-80 jets. It was dangerous and many in the class did not survive. His BS degree was from the University of Maryland and MBA from Ohio State University.In 1946 while stationed in San Antonio, he met an attractive young Texan named Helen Fries at the Junior Officers Club. They were married in 1947. That union lasted until Helens death in 2009 and produced 4 children.Richard and Helen lived in many states and Japan as his military career progressed. While living in Southern California, Richard worked on plans and programming for the Atlas missile. In1967, he retired from the Air Force as Lieutenant Colonel and went to work for Braniff Airlines. Richard loved Texas and being a father to his beloved children. They took advantage of his flight benefits and continued to travel. It was a house filled with laughter, friends and lots of love.Richard continued to fly after leaving Braniff and was a wonderful mentor and flight instructor to many students. He received the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award for his over 50-year contribution to aviation and was a member of Quiet Birdmen.Richard was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, wife Helen, and his son Steven. He is survived by his daughters, Pamela Miller, Debbie Watson (Ed) and Michelle Garcia (John). He is also survived by grandchildren Lael Collop, Mark Collop Jr., Will Watson, Jenna Watson, Laura Dizien, Jessica McReynolds, Jarred Pickens and Stephanie Miller. In addition, hes survived by 5 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his special companion of nine years, Joy Gaines.Richard loved life and people. He never met a stranger, whether he was at Kroger, the doctors office or Home Depot.A special thank you to his caregivers, Ebere Uzoma and Bridget Oguntona.
