Miriam Rose
Herndon
November 1, 1951 – October 8, 2021
Miriam Rose Herndon, beloved wife of Dr. James Herndon and loving mother of Lauren Glass, passed away on Saturday, October 23, after a brief illness. She was 69.
Miriam Patrice Rose was born November 1, 1951 in Leakesville, Mississippi, the first of four children. The family moved to Amite, Louisiana in 1954, then moved to Dallas in 1966 where she was involved in the drill team and student government. She was known among her many friends for her bubbly energy and easy laugh. After graduating from the University of Texas in 1973, she taught middle school briefly then began her career managing medical practices which she continued until her retirement.
She married Dr. Herndon in 1997 and they enjoyed 24 years together. We always made sure we were on the same team, said Dr. Herndon of their marriage.
She was a steadfast mother to her daughter from a previous marriage, Lauren Glass, and a welcoming stepmother to stepson Mark Glass. Though she was competitive with her brother John, one year her junior, they held a deep bond. Her two younger sisters depended on her for long talks about children, jobs, and men. And she was a doting aunt to her two nephews and a niece.
An avid gardener, she was happiest among her flowers which included orchids as well as a multitude of flowering shrubs, succulents, and roses. Aphids and thrips were her sworn enemies, but she would never stoop so low as to use non-organic means to rid her leafy children of the pests.
She brought the beauty indoors by making exquisite needlework pillows and pictures which she gifted to family and friends. The Herndon home was always lushly decorated for each season with custom wreaths and arrangements. And she carried on the family tradition of great cooking and large holiday gatherings with friends and family.
She devoted the last several years of her life to caring for her beloved mother, Rubye Rose, with whom she shared her passion for plants and family. Mrs. Rose passed away in April 2021. Throughout her life, Miriam was fortunate to know many helpers including advisors, aids for her mother, housekeepers, and gardeners, all of whom she treated like family. On her passing, many noted how special she was and that they had never known anyone quite like her.
Her close friends included fellow gardeners, long-time members of her aquatic exercise group who call themselves the mermaids, classmates from high school that she had held onto all those years, and more recent friends acquired throughout Dr. Herndons distinguished career in the Dallas medical community.
Mrs. Herndon was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Rubye Rose, and her sister Elizabeth Sheppard, all of Dallas.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. James Herndon of Dallas; daughter Lauren Glass of Chicago, Illinois; brother John Rose of La Grande, Oregon; sister Rosemarie Rose (Bob Meyers) of Alexandria, Virginia; nephew Adam Gain of Dallas; niece April Gain (Obed Manuel) of Denver, Colorado; nephew Sam Meyers of Alexandria, Virginia; stepson Mark Glass (Serafina) of Dallas; and stepdaughters Eleanor Munson (John), Margaret Herndon (Kurt Scheiner), and Emily Herndon, all of Dallas. Mourners include aunts, uncles and cousins in Dallas, Alabama, Florida and North Carolina. She is also survived by her beloved cat, Bones.
