Daniel Patrick OShea, III, 57, and Jesuits Bishop Lynch Award recipient for that year as, in the Awards own words, the student of Jesuit High School who has most faithfully reflected the spirit of the school and has been most responsive to its influences, died of kidney failure on June 21, 2021, in the Carrollton home of his youngest daughter with his family present. Born on December 14, 1938, he was 82.
After graduating from Jesuit, where he had also been a National Merit Scholarship semi-finalist, lead actor in the Schools Shakespeare play, and second team All-State right tackle on the Ranger football team, this first of seven brothers with no sisters entered the Society of Jesus and spent the next four years at the orders Grand Coteau, Louisiana, seminary. He was then sent to St. Louis University where he earned his bachelors in economics together with masters degrees in both economics and philosophy. For the next three years, he taught at Strake Jesuit in Houston where he also directed the theater program.Theology in Toronto, Canada, followed with his gaining his third masters and deciding, having declined ordination, that the priesthood was not his true calling. He then became an editor with McGraw Hill Ryerson publishers in Toronto. Four years after having left the Jesuits, he married Joan Marie Ferrigan who for seven years had been a nun in the Faithful Companions of Jesus, founded in France in 1820.In 1980, he returned to Texas with Joan and the Canadian-born first four of their six children with two Texans to follow and joined with an area management consulting and training company before accepting an offer from Ursuline Academy in Dallas where he taught Latin for 23 years and, before retiring, portrayed the role of Tevye in an Ursuline production of Fiddler on the Roof.In addition to their own children, he and Joan became and continued to be foster-parents to sisters Brandy and Tiffany Taylor and their brother Eugene who, as an adult and as a tribute to Dan and Joan, legally changed his name to Michael Patrick OShea.Dan is survived by daughters Kathleen Kate OShea Carone and her husband Michael Carone, Meghan OShea, Siobhan OShea, Tara OShea and her partner Michael Johnson, Molly OShea Mulkey and her husband Garrett Mulkey, the three foster children as well as 10 grandchildren, and by brothers Michael J. OShea, 60, Timothy T. OShea, M.D., 62, and Kevin D. OShea, M.D., 67. He was preceded in death by his wife Joan who died in 2020 at the age of 74, son Daniel P. OShea, IV, brothers Joseph King OShea, 59, Brian P. OShea, 68, and Downs Syndrome Terrence J. OShea who had died in 1956 at the age of nine.Memorial services will be held at Mary Immaculate Church,2800 Valwood Parkway, Farmers Branch, Texas, Friday, July 9, at 10:00 AM.
