Obituary

Raymond (Ray) was born to Ida and Clarence Quelland on January 10, 1934, in Foley Village, Minnesota. He passed away three years after being diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. He was lovingly cared for during this illness and at the time of his death by his family. He is preceded in death by his wife, Janice Quelland, parents Ida and Clarence Quelland and brother Norman.

Ray grew up in Duluth Minnesota doing all the things young boys do in Minnesota- bike riding, paper route, anything in the snow and even forming a bird club with boys he kept in touch with well into adulthood. After graduating from Duluth East High School in 1952 he attended Hamlin University in St Paul Minnesota. He graduated in 1956 with a Bachelor's Degree in Business. While at Hamlin he played basketball and football. He also met his wife of 64 years, Janice (Jan) at Hamlin after she asked him to a Sadie Hawkins dance.

After graduation, he attended Navy Officer Candidate School in Rhode Island. Upon graduation from OCS in 1956, he married Jan and they lived in Georgia and San Diego, Ca., before being discharged in 1959. He was a very popular officer on the ship as he was the payroll guy! Ray and Jan settled in Farmers Branch in 1962 where he was very involved in activities involving boys since he had three girls. He was a big brother in Big Brothers of America, an umpire for Little League Baseball, a leader in the Boy Scouts of America including Eagle Courts of Honor and Camp Philmont trips. He had a group of men friends that went camping, hiking, and fishing together for years.

After retiring from Allstate Insurance Company after 32 years, he and Jan traveled all over the United States and Europe. His goal was to visit all 50 states and he only lacked Oregon and Alaska at the time of his death. He became a very active volunteer at food banks, church, the Farmers Branch Senior Center, and Meals on Wheels. He continued to play golf, tennis, walk and play bridge.

Ray was a long-time member of Christ United Methodist Church in Farmers Branch- over 60 years. He served as usher, Staff Parish Chair, and member of the Finance Committee to illustrate just a few ways he served the church.

He is survived by daughters, Nancy Quelland, Betsy McKinney, Kay Humbert, son-in-law Daniel Humbert; four grandchildren, Megan McKinney and Zachary McKinney and their father Chuck McKinney, Sadie Humbert and Josiah Humbert and his son Ziya Jones. In addition, Jack and Bobbie Kettlewell (brother -in-law and sister -in-law), Jim Hill (brother-in-law) and numerous nieces and nephews from the Kettlewell, Hill and Quelland families.

The family would like to thank the wonderful caregivers dad had the past 1 ½ years- Lisa, Gladys, and Oksanna – as well as the staff at Briarview Assisted Living and Memory Care.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday March 21, 2024, at 2pm at Christ United Methodist Church, 2807 Valwood Parkway, Farmers Branch, Tx., 75234.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Association (https://act.alz.org) or Christ United Methodist Church (https://www.christ4u.org) .
