Obituary

Donald Bruce Rooker, 61, of Rowlett, died suddenly Friday, June 17th following a brief illness. Don is survived by his daughter, Jennifer Maren Rooker of Leander, Texas, his stepson and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Alicia Robertson of Lubbock, Texas, and his sister and brother-in-law, Anne and John Whirley of Memphis, Tennessee, along with a host of other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Robertson Rooker, and parents, Bert and Joanne Rooker.Although born in Valdosta, Georgia, Don graduated from high school in Mentor, Ohio, and was a die-hard Longhorns fan, having graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1977. He trained as a Medical Technologist but spent his career working in the energy industry, brokering power contracts for municipalities in New Mexico, Arizona, and California, before settling back in Texas, where he was happily employed at Garland Power and Light.Don was an avid golfer who served for a time as an ambassador at Waterview Golf Club. He never went long without a rock and roll band to play in and will be remembered for his hard driving guitar and his love of the old songs. From his first MGB, through his years with an original 240 Z-Car, all his Porsches, and the Jaguar which nearly drove him crazy, to the Mercedes convertible sitting in his garage today, Don was a car nut. No one knows how much time he spent under the hood and under the bodies of some of those worn out works of art, but he loved them all. A long-time friend of Bill, he loved his community and his church, and his friends describe him as an outgoing, gentle man who knew how to be a friend like few others. He helped people he knew, and he helped people he didnt know. He was a loving husband, father, brother, and friend; and when the shock wears off, he will be greatly missed.Don chose to be cremated. In honor and appreciation of his importance in our lives, a service of remembrance will be held at First Christian Church-Rowlett on Saturday, July 9th at 1:00.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Special Olympics, the American Heart Association, or First Christian Church-Rowlett.
