Obituary

Salvador Santos Gosman Jr (Sal) from Rio Piedras, PR died on February 21, 2025, in Dallas, TX at the age of 87. With all hope, he was met in heaven by his mother Guillermina Santos and father Salvador Guzman Sr.

Sal was born in Rio Piedras, PR. From a young age he helped his father run the family furniture company. But adventure called him and at 18 he was excited to come to the US mainland. He met and lived with his aunt in New York first then went to live with his other aunt in Wilmer, TX. At the age of 22 he enlisted in the US Army and served in Germany and Korea engineering floating bridges at those bases. A proud veteran, he carried his love of country into the diligence he pursued at home, the generosity he poured out to those he saw in need the most, and pride in flying a fresh crisp American flag high.

After his time of service, he spent some time in California before moving to Dallas, TX permanently and became a moulder for Dallas Cast Stone Co where he used his woodworking skills to build molds for large stones seen on the face or foot of buildings for 25+ years. He had much pride in his work and the work of his companions and proudly talked about the stones used in the buildings he drove past. His daughter recalls him bringing her one of his stone works to place at the foot of her playhouse in the backyard. This love of using his hands to create led to him to spend a lot of his spare time in the workshop he built next to his house; always constructing something: a tree house, a miniature farm for his daughter's school project, a piece of furniture for his home.

Sal had a heart for people. He could not bear to see people go hungry. Anytime he saw a homeless person he would turn the car around and go out of his way to give them whatever he has in his wallet even if he would go without later. This was also seen in the charities he supported and showed off the children he sponsored as if they were his own. His charity expanded to all of earths creatures as he often took in wounded birds to nurse back to health and built a little farm of ducks, chickens, rabbits and even a turkey once within the Dallas city limits.

Sal loved fiercely. He was a man among women and truly treasured his little sister, his daughter, and his three granddaughters. He always remembered to send a card for every holiday including a snipped newspaper clipping of an article that he had read reminding him of the recipient. Maya Angelo said, "People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." Sal will be remembered by those he loved as someone who made them feel loved, special, extraordinary. He is survived by his sister Gladys Rodrigues, his daughter Jocelyn Ohm (married to Jared Ohm) and his three granddaughters Sophia, Julia, and Miriam.

Funeral mass for Sal will be held Friday, March 14, 2025, at 11am at St. Bernard of Clairvaux Catholic Church (1404 Old Gate Lane, Dallas, TX 75218). Rosary will be held 30 min prior to mass at 10:30 at the same location.
