Sam Gwon Kang Obituary

Sam Gwon Kang, 88, passed away peacefully at his home in Irving, TX, on August 17, 2026. He was born in Kwang Ju, South Korea on July 29, 1938 to Chil Yong Kang and Kwi Rim Kong. He was the youngest of five children. Sam majored in English in college and worked for World Vision where he met his future wife, Mee Hee (Hanna) Han. He and Hanna married and had their son Andrew in Korea. When Andrew was a toddler, the family moved to the United States so that Sam could eventually attend Seminary to become a pastor. They had their second son, Robin while living in Virginia. When their children were young, Sam was an accountant for a while and eventually owned a convenience store.

They moved to Hurst, Texas in 1982 so that Sam could attend Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He pastored several Korean churches while attending seminary and after he graduated in 1995. Three of the churches he pastored were Dongsan Church in Arlington, Chowon Church in Richarson, and a Korean Baptist church in Sherman. After retiring, he attended Semihan Church and served as the Korean Coordinator for the Dallas Baptist Association. He was also active in a group of retired Korean Pastors. It brought Sam great joy to serve as a pastor and it was truly his calling.

He was proceeded in death by his parents and his wife, Hanna. He is survived by his two sons, Andrew and Robin, his daughter-in-law, Pam, grandsons, Jason and Joshua, and many relatives in the United States and South Korea.
