Sheila Duncan
Moore
February 21, 1947 – May 1, 2024
Sheila Duncan Moore was born February 21, 1947 and left us May 1, 2024.
She was born Sheila Duncan (middle names for girls were eschewed as unnecessary in her family) in Longview, TX, the daughter of the late Bennie Fred and Annalee Duncan. The family moved quite a bit in her early years--with brief sojourns in Shreveport and Houma, LA as well as Falfurrias, TX--before re-settling back behind the Pine Curtain in Gilmer and subsequently all the way back to Longview.
Sheila attended Judson schools prior to Longview's school consolidation, graduating as salutatorian in Judson High School's final class in 1965. She attended Baylor University, class of 1969, where she was a renowned debater. In a freshman English class at Armstrong Browning Library, she met Gene Moore. After she earned a Master of Library Science degree from North Texas State (now UNT), they were married August 22, 1970 at Oakland Heights Baptist Church in Longview.
In the first years of their marriage, Sheila taught math and English at several Waco-area high schools-- including Richfield, University, and Robinson—while Gene completed Baylor Law School. They moved to the Dallas area in 1973, where she worked in the Irving school district. While her official career ended after having children, she maintained a passion for education while raising her family, first in Houston where she tutored numerous neighborhood kids in algebra, and then in Corning, NY, where the family moved in 1987 and where she served on and led as many committees as it's likely possible to join, from PTA Council to First Presbyterian Church Boards to the Women's Center of the Southern Tier.
She and Gene returned to Texas in early 2000, moving back to the same Lake Highlands neighborhood they left in 1976…even backing up to the same power easement. She dove right back into volunteerism and education, serving meals at Ronald McDonald House via Dallas Junior Forum (now Dallas Service Forum) and tutoring at a local school. She enjoyed her sessions with the Mary K. Craig class and loved attending Rejebian Book Review evenings, especially because that meant she didn't have to actually read the book if she didn't want to.
Sheila is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Geoff and Nicki Moore of Dallas, TX, her daughter and son-in-law Emily and Seth Kenton of Silver Spring, MD, and three grandchildren—Brooks & Camille Kenton and Griffin Moore, as well as sister Sylvia (Fred) Kyle of Jacksonville, FL and brother David Duncan of Richardson, TX, and six nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her husband of nearly 44 years, Eugene H. (Gene) Moore, in 2014.
A memorial service to celebrate Sheila's life will be held Tuesday, May 14th at 10:30 am at Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church, 9800 Preston Rd, Dallas, TX. All are welcome; additionally, it will be livestreamed at www.phpc.org/streaming. Should friends desire, contributions can be sent to the Creede Repertory Theater (www.creederep.org), where donations in her honor will be earmarked for their education department, furthering her lifelong dedication to teaching.
There's an old aphorism that dozens of people claim to have coined along the lines of, "there is no limit to what you can accomplish if you don't care about getting the credit." Regardless of origin, there's no greater exemplar of that sentiment than Sheila Duncan Moore, who was born missing a name but grew to enjoy many others, most notably "Mom" and "Grammie."
