Mike Silverstein was born on June 12, 1941 in Manhattan, New York to Audrey and Abraham Silverstein. He grew up in Brooklyn, New York and enjoyed basketball, swimming, and boxing. He graduated high school and attended college in New York. During his high school years he was a member of the swim team. He later joined the Army and a became Ranger during the Vietnam era specializing as a sharpshooter. Always a great lover of music, while stationed in Germany he became a drummer in a local band. He moved to Atlanta and met Charlene Miller. They were married in 1973 and had two children Christine and Eric Silverstein. He was a talented entrepreneur and successful businessman in the import/export wholesale industry for most of his career. Later he became a principal in an import company and traveled to Hong Kong and Jakarta, Indonesia. He was a devoted family man and husband and had a personality that would eventually win you over. He was always willing to help someone in need and always offered advice. Although he experienced great success and later hardship in his life he never let it change who he was. He loved spending time with son including coaching him in sports, camping, and dancing. Christy and her father had a special relationship and became much closer as his health declined in the most recent years. He had a love for animals and had two certified service dogs for the last ten years. Sniffles and Champ were his constant companions. On December 24, 2001 his neck was broken as the result of a serious automobile accident. Through his determination to walk again he was able to complete the rehabilitation program successfully. He made a promise to God that if he was able to walk again he would give back to the community. He later became very involved in the VA Hospital as a daily volunteer in the spinal cord division. He was an active member of the PVA for many years. He was given several awards for his thousands of volunteer hours at the VA Hospital. He participated in the Golden Age Games and won medals in pool, dominoes, nine-ball, bowling, and a bronze medal in swimming. He was a member of the Messianic congregation at Adat Shalom where he enjoyed attending Shabbat service on Friday nights.He leaves behind his daughter, Christine Silverstein; son, Eric Silverstein; granddaughter, Zoe Silverstein; brother, Edward Silverstein and his wife, Jackie Silverstein, and his ex-wife, Charlene Silverstein, and many friends that will greatly miss him.Visitation will be from 12:30pm to 1:30pm with the funeral service beginning at 1:30 pm on Thursday, March 22, 2012 at Trinity Episcopal Church, 12727 Hillcrest Road, Dallas, Texas 75230. Rev. Robin Rose will be officiating.Graveside services will be on Friday, March 23, 2012 at 10:15 am at DFW National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas, Texas 75211.Please send the family condolences and sign the guest book on this website.
