Obituary

Obituary of VERNA JEAN LOVE Verna Jean Love (Herbst) of Carrollton, TX formerly from Dallas, TX & Wilmette, IL, passed away peacefully at the age of 92 on February 23, 2024. Verna was born in San Francisco, California on June 4,1931,to Charles and Gertrude (Eggert) Herbst. She was the eldest of two children and her younger brother, James C. Herbst, preceded her in death in 2022. When Verna was a child, her family moved to North Milwaukee, Wisconsin where she later graduated fromCuster High School in 1949. In 1953, Verna graduated from the University of Wisconsin State College-Milwaukee (UW-M) with a BA in Elementary Education. As part of her studies, Verna learned to play piano and guitar, enduring skills that her students enjoyed over the years. After college, Verna moved back to California where she was a kindergarten teacher in San Diego and met her future husband (Larry John Love) at a Naval "Brass Hatters" military ball. After a four-month courtship, Verna and Larry were married on August 13,1955. Larry preceded Verna in death in 2021 after being happily married for 61 years. Verna and Larry moved from San Diego to Pacific Grove, CA where Verna taught first grade and eventually moved back to Wisconsin where she became a full-time mother in 1958. In 1965, the couple moved to Wilmette, IL. Verna returned to teaching soon after her three boys were grown and became a teachers aide at Hubbard Woods School in Winnetka, IL. In addition to teaching, Verna had expert calligraphy skills and shared this unique artistic talent generously with family, friends, and local schools. In 1989, Larry and Verna retired to Dallas, TX to enjoy the warmer climate and lower taxes. For over 30 years, they embraced living in Texas; making good friends, attending local events, and traveling frequently (California and Hawaii being favorite destinations). Verna and Larry loved to wear matching souvenir sweatshirts from their travels. Verna enjoyed sewing, doing daily crossword and Jumble puzzles, and crafting hand-written letters to her life-long pen-pals. She wrote beautifully with her calligraphy and used ink stamps to decorate her envelopes and letters. Verna was an extrovert and never met a stranger. She had a delightful sense of humor and loved to tell stories about the funny things she saw happen every day. She liked to joke that she became a teacher only because she was too short to be a Radio City Rockette. Verna had a tenacious spirit also and was known for getting things done. Her favorite saying: The squeaky wheel gets the oil. Vernas greatest joy in life was spending time with friends, family, and her four grandsons. Verna lived her life well, loved her family devotedly, and will be missed sincerely. Verna is survived by her three sons, Craig, and his wife, Jane, of Arlington Heights, IL, Brian and his wife, Nancy, of Ann Arbor, MI, and Kevin and his wife, Daylene, of Shrewsbury, MA, and her grandsons, John, Ryan, Francisco, and Beni. Services will be private. Verna will be interred at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery where she will rejoin her husband eternally. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Parkinsons Foundation.
