Ruth Elizabeth Whitten was born inWest Orange NJon February 20, 1933 to Lee and Francis Slockbower. She passed away on July 9, 2014 at home with her husband Bill and son Craig by her side. Ruth was the youngest of four children. Growing up in New Jersey, Ruth loved the New Jersey seashore where she spent summersat the family's seaside cottage. After graduating from Glen Ridge High School, Ruth eventually worked as a stewardess with Eastern Airlines, which fostered her passion for traveling. She met William H. Whitten ("Bill") on the beach in Miami on one of her trips. They were married in Linwood NJ on February 24, 1962 and settled in Dallas in 1972.Ruth was an avid bridge player, participating in several regular bridge groups and any other game she could find. She enjoyed exercising daily. After her children were grown, she worked part-time for James Avery, a jeweler.In addition to raising her family, Ruth displayed her care for others by volunteering in hospitals and care facilities throughout her lifeand delivering meals with Bill for Meals on Wheels. She was a member of Northwood Woman's Club, a philanthropic group of ladies,for 40 years and cherished the friends she made in that organization. Ruth enjoyed visiting with her friends every week at the24/7 Sundayschool classat Lover's Lane Methodist Church.Ruth and Bill shared a love of travel and were fortunate to visit many countries in Europe, Asia, Australia and Africa.She is survived byimmediate family of herhusband Bill andher two sons Christopher Scott and Michael Craig.A celebration of Ruth's life will be held in Dallas at Lover's Lane Methodist Church onAugust 11, 2014 at 11:00 am.
