Obituary

Olive Elizabeth Wood was born on May 24th 1956 to Ivy Maxwell and Osmond Wood in Manningsfield, Jamaica and died on April 19th, 2020 in Dallas, Texas. Olive loved learning and sharing knowledge, even in her childhood she would act as a teacher to her friends in the community of Manningsfield. It is no surprise that she went on to be a teacher, working for several years as a trainee teacher at Patrick Town Primary school and obtaining her teaching degree from Bethlehem Teachers College in 1982. She then committed the next thirteen years to teaching music and reading at Winston Jones Comprehensive High School (formerly Pratville Secondary School). She not only taught her subjects but joined with the dynamic team of teachers there to create a school life filled with the production of exciting plays, school fairs and the infamous graduation songs where she conducted the graduating class like a maestro. Olive migrated to the United States with her two daughters in 1997. She settled first in New York and took her love of caring for others into the field of nursing. She moved to Georgia, and then Philadelphia where she excelled first as a geriatric nurse and then finally specializing in pediatric care. Olive also met and married the love of her life Hemmerde Bartley with whom she eventually moved to Dallas in 2018.Olive spent her last few years in Dallas enjoying time with her grand-daughter Madison and continuing to work as a nurse. She never stopped caring for others, teaching all she knew, volunteering with her church community and acting as a guide and a shoulder to her children, family and community. Olive is survived by husband Hemmerde Bartley, daughters Chakera McIntosh and Kamille Wilkinson, grandchildren Amir Kane, Kassim Kane and Madison Mitchell, siblings Claudette Sinclair, Hugh Harding, Prudence McKenzie, Morais Brown, Jacqueline Brown, Mervyn Wood, Robert Wood, Laxley Wood, Devon Malcolm and Hilda West. She leaves behind her aunts, a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, dear friends and colleagues.A memorial service for Olive Elizabeth Wood will be held at a future date at the family home in Manchester, Jamaica.
