Obituary of Williams, Marilyn Joy

Joy was not just her name, it was how she lived her life, and now she is experiencing the ultimate joy of heaven. Her children witnessed her first glimpse of that joy, as she opened her eyes and smiled in her last moment. For 84 years, Joy fulfilled her desire to see wonderful sights, hear amazing concerts, and play golf on magnificent courses. Growing up in Hamlin, TX, Joy loved to ride her horse to a shade tree and read books of all kinds to learn about the world, a habit she continued her entire life. Joy relished reading the newspaper comics, especially Pickles, as she identified with Opal and Bob was like Earl. She was never far from an atlas and always looking for another place to visit. Joy encouraged her children and grandchildren to travel and explore both in person and through reading books. Joy traveled extensively, visiting Europe several times, England (once sailing on the Queen Elizabeth II) and Scotland, Italy, Japan, Thailand, and even China in the 1970s. Her home was filled with pictures, oriental rugs and special items from each location. While living in Colorado Springs, Joy and Bob hosted NASA astronauts for goose hunting on the family ranch. The astronauts reciprocated by hosting Joy and Bob in Houston where they toured Skylab and even sat in an Apollo capsule. Joy and Bob also were invited to dinner at the White House as guests of President Ford. Joy loved going to Las Vegas shows and Broadway plays and musicals, seeing all the best ones in New York and London. More recently, Joy traveled to Pasadena, CA to watch the Rose Parade in person. Joy’s golfing accomplishments included 2 holes-in-one and 2 Brookhaven Ladies’ Club Championships-with 20 years between each championship. She played golf in many locations, but particularly on every island in Hawaii and at Glen Eagles in Scotland. She loved to watch videos of her grandson Sam’s golf tournaments as well as the PGA tournaments. Joy will be missed by her husband of 65 years, Bob C. Williams of Dallas; daughter Meridyn Pickett and son-in-law David with grandchildren Jason Williams and Joyanne and Kyle Edgerley and great grandchild Cheyenne Edgerley, “the wee one”, of Farmers Branch; son Reid Williams and daughter-in-law Jo Ann and grandson Sam Williams of Shreveport, LA. Joy is also survived by her sisters Ann Rose of Ballinger, TX and Janice Hymer of Castroville, TX, and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, Joy’s wish is for you to read often to a child, or donate books to inspire the next generation. Visitation will be Tuesday, September 9, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at North Dallas Funeral Home, 2710 Valley View Lane, Farmers Branch, TX. A celebration service will be at 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday, September 10, conducted by Pastor Terry McLellan at Faith United Presbyterian Church, 12717 Marsh Lane, Farmers Branch, TX. Please send family condolences and sign the guestbook on this website.

Joy is our first cousin, daughter of my father’s younger sister. She was such a gracious hostess to us when we visited her and Bob many years ago in Dallas. She wasn’t sure what we’d like to eat, so she prepared two completely different dinners. One was a pork roast dinner and the other a complete lasagna meal! When two of my sisters and my wife Judi and I visited another sister in Oklahoma, our cousin Joy flew over to get in on the visit and we had such a wonderful time with her. We have so many terrific memories of our childhood cousins Joy, JoAnn, and Janice. God bless you, Joy, and you also, Bob. We love you. From your California cousins, Pat, Jacque, RD and Judi.

My prayers are with you. She was always such a pleasure to be with. We enjoyed her coming up here when the California bunch would come.
