Obituary of McCune, Mark P.

Mark Paul McCune, born February 18, 1955 in St. Louis, Missouri, died on January 16, 2015. He is survived by his wife Carolyn McCune, one son and his wife, David and Lori McCune, one daughter and her husband, Diane and Charles Allen, one grandchild, Annalise McCune, his parents, Monty and Barbara McCune, and two sisters and their husbands, Sandy  and Rob Phillips and Sharon and David Byers, as well as many nieces and nephews. He loved being with family and everyone loved and adored him. He was always encouraging and patient and protective and wanted the best for not only his children but for all his nieces and nephews. He was funny and smart and read aloud the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy one summer to his wife and kids. He made friends everywhere he went, studied, or worked, going out of his way to make people feel welcome and at home. A huge part of his life was working with the International Sunday School class and Wednesday English classes at Park Cities Baptist Church, exploring the city with many friends. Music always played a big role in his life, from an early age in Chanute playing piano and clarinet. He majored in Woodwinds at William Jewell College and got his Masters in Music Theory at University of Missouri – Kansas City. After moving to Texas, he continued to teach piano lessons. He became the Minister of Music at Colony Park Baptist Church, arranging and composing music in all forms. Later, at Park Cities Baptist Church he was a founding member of the orchestra, earning him the very official title of Principal Clarinet Emeritus when he retired. In addition to piano and clarinet, he could pick up almost any instrument and make music with it, including the trumpet, accordion, and the Vietnamese moon lute. He had other various and sundry interests that he shared with all friends and family. He worked as a computer programmer for years after receiving a Masters in Computer Science from the University of North Texas. He collected books on history, philosophy, and all manner of literature, as well as movies and music from all genres. He loved to travel, spending a semester in Vienna, Austria during college, all around the US, and to London and China to visit friends and family. Prompted by his perpetual curiosity and his friends from China, he learned much about Chinese culture and studied Mandarin Chinese for several years. And of course, he always had his camera with him, documenting family gatherings, church events, and all outings with friends. The visitation will be Monday, January 19, 2015 from 5:00-8:00pm in the parlor at North Dallas Funeral Home, 2710 Valley View Lane, Farmers Branch, Texas 75234. Funeral services will be on Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at 2:00pm in the sanctuary of Park Cities Baptist Church, 3933 Northwest Parkway, Dallas, Texas 75225. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research here (https://www.michaeljfox.org/get-involved/donation2.php) or call 1-800-708-7644. Please send condolences to the family on this website.

i, too, grew up with Mark in Chanute. Always the gentleman and so musically talented. I remember a particular time I had a favorite song on the radio that I wanted to play on the piano and there was no sheet music available. In talking with Mark about it, he volunteered to write the music for me–and he did! I was so excited to have it. That’s just who he was!
So sorry for your loss. Heaven certainly gained an angel that day and I’m sure the music is even better.
He will always be remembered with fondness!

Gone too soon. I, too, attended High School with Mark. He was in band and theater class with me and was the best man in my 1975 wedding. Class act. Many reasons God wanted him to have his angel wings I’m sure. Hugs to his family.
