Obituary of Grimmett Jr., Coye Glen

Coye Glen Grimmett, Jr., 77, of Farmers Branch, passed away April 12, 2015.  He is survived by his wife, Judy, nine children, Leslie (Bill) Hammack, Etienne, Jennifer (Mike) Doviak, Danielle Grimmett-Cain, Myles, Quinn (Kim), Becket (Sandra), Jordanna (Charlie Battison), Arielle (Andy) Rodriguez,  14 grandchildren, and brothers William Peter and Daniel Darrell.  He is preceded in death by his parents, sons, Dominic and Gannon, and grandson, Dominic. Coye was born August, 1937 to Coye and Hazel (Russell) Grimmett in Lewisville, Arkansas.  The oldest of three boys, he attended Jesuit High School and Forest Avenue High School, Dallas.  He attended the University of Dallas and received an MA in Religious Education in 1981.  He was a third order Carmelite.  He worked for Fox Photo followed by Allstate Insurance Company for 30 years. Coye was the most amazing, unique, boisterous, mystical, musical, humorous, hungry, spiritual, cosmic, crazy, loud, dramatic, loving, instructing, poetic, magnetic, theatrical, and magical husband, father, grandfather, and brother anyone could hope for.  He held us when we wept and rocked us to sleep, taught us to show convictions for our passions and tried to fashion each of us into the perfect person (or at least look good while being imperfect!)Through bad lessons and good, he did what he could to show us how to live.  He will forever be present in our laughter, loudness, humor, hijinks, generosity, unconditional love, pranks, spirituality, and spunk.  He wished for us all to walk in peace and love with the scent of wildflowers surrounding us on our path to an intimate encounter with God. Services will begin at 11:30am Monday, May 11, 2015, at Mary Immaculate Catholic Church, 2800 Valwood Pkwy, Farmers Branch with the holy rosary, followed by a Memorial Mass at 12:00pm, interment at MI Columbarium and reception in church hall at 1:15pm. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Please send the family condolences on this website.

Dear Grimmett Family, Please accept our most sincere condolences. You have been, are, and will continue to be in our thoughts and prayers. May the Lord send His Angels to comfort you as you walk this “valley of tears”. Although he has physically left us, his presence and his greatest fruits: his family and all he taught them remain as a testament to his great work. Love, Rina and Ramiro Rivera

Mr. Grimmett you will be greatly missed by so many people. I will pray continuously for your family here on earth so they may continue on with there daily lives. Some day soon I am sure someone will write a book about Mr. Grimmett. He had so many talents and so many many stories. Even though I was not related I felt and lived most of the stories. There house was my second home growing up. God Bless you Mr. Grimmett. You will be and already are missed by so many.

My friendship with Coye Grimmett goes back about 45 years. That was precisely because he was a Secular Order Member of the Teresian Carmelites (OCDS, as mentioned in his Obituary. From Little Rock I moved to Dallas in the Spring of 1974, and he and his wife Judy and their large family opened their doors to me as the ‘last born of their tribe’, so to speak.

As a tribute I want to testify that Coye was first of all a Catholic-Christian Family Man! No matter what we were discussing in my many visits over the years, whenever his wife or any one of his children entered the room, I expected his full attention to turn to his family member with total concern to see if she/he needed anything. And so it was, and so it continued to be always. It was beautiful to observe and ponder, a natural display of his sensibilities.

I also wish to testify to the fact that Coye was a lay theologian, well read on so many current ecclesiastical and pastoral topics. He was especially interested in Carmelite Spirituality. It would have been hard to find anyone more devoted to prayer and the spiritual life as perceived by the Catholic Church and the Order of Carmel. With this deep interest he served as Master of Formation for a number of years in the Dallas Secular Order. He was very much appreciated by his lay peers and the friars. He was quite devoted to Mt. Carmel Center in Oak Cliff Dallas – our Center of Spirituality – that still operates in the same location on Chalk Hill.

In terms of capacity for human friendship, he was a master, ever attentive and ready to help old friends and new. I often referred people with problems to his telephone counsel. He was very practical, and knowable about legal matters involved in human and family affairs.

And Coye had a special gift for consoling people. I will never forget his phone call upon learning of the death of my dear mother in Houston in January of this very year. Through his sincere tears he managed at length to become an extension of the Paraclete — the Holy Spirit of faith and love and hope and consolation to my own grieving soul – the first born of Louise Frances Morello, who departed this world just eight days short of 102!

This time-tested friend was deeply human, complex, and comprehensive of the whole spectrum of human emotions and the twists and turns of the human heart. His feet were on the ground of human experience.

God bless you, Coye, my dear Brother. And God console your sweet wife and family that you have left in God’s loving providence! May the prayers of the Virgin Mary of Carmel ever assist your family in your absence. And as we pray for you in the Lord, keep an eye on us from above, the home towards which we all strive.

Eternal rest to you, dear friend forever in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.
