Obituary of
Taylor Sr., John Allen
John A. Taylor, Sr., beloved husband, father and grandfather went to be with his Lord on Thursday, October 22, 2015. He was born July 20, 1937 in Monahans, Texas to Albert T. and Georgia M. Taylor. He graduated from Monahans High School in 1955 and from Texas Western College in 1959. He served in the United States Army and the Air National Guard. John became a Christian at the age of nine through the Christian teachings of his parents and the First Baptist Church of Monahans. He actively attended Park Cities Baptist Church where he served as Deacon and Treasurer, and he recently joined the Highland Park Presbyterian Church. He dearly loved his wife, family and his many friends. John is survived by his wife, Betty Brown Taylor, his children, John A. Taylor, Jr., Allison Taylor Benners and husband, Rick, Amanda Taylor Cecil and husband, Scott, and his four grandchildren, Tripp and Will Benners and Hunter and Hannah Cecil. John was active in many Dallas clubs and civic organizations including the Dallas Country Club, Dallas Petroleum Club and the Salesmanship Club of Dallas. He served as President of the Dallas Country Club, Chairman of the Salesmanship Club Foundation, Board of Directors and Treasurer of Goodwill Industries, Treasurer of the Dallas Community College District and the Boards of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Arboretum and Dallas Fiscal Affairs Committee. Professionally, John served on the Board and as Treasurer of the Dealer Bank Association and the Professional Advisory Committee of the Municipal Securities Rule Making Board. In 1962 John joined the Mercantile National Bank of Dallas as a trainee in the Bond Department under the tutelage of his friend and mentor Lewis F. Lyne. John loved the Mercantile Bank and the banking business, having served as Funds Management Division Executive, Chairman of the Asset and Liability Committee, Political Action Committee and ultimately retiring from the Bank as Executive Vice President. After retiring from the banking business, John spent time in the insurance, real estate and investment management businesses, serving at the time of his death as Chairman Emeritus of Taylor Stephens, Inc., a Dallas registered investment advisory firm. John loved golf and played regularly at the Dallas Country Club with his friends and was proud to have attended every Masters Tournament from 1973-2015. A Memorial Service to honor John’s life will be held on Tuesday, October 27, at 4:00 p.m. at Highland Park Presbyterian Church, Reverend Bryan Dunagan and Reverend Joseph Wheat officiating. Pall Bearers: Sam Burford, Bill Brinson, Barry Andrews, Gene Bishop, Joe Ford, Robert Hallam, Frank Marshall, Frank Neill, Gifford Touchstone, Wade Smith, Kip Tindell, Cameron Campbell, John Manor, Jim Thompson, Dr. Robert Schoenvogel, Dr. Bob Parks and Dr. Howard “Butch” Derrick. Honorary Pall Bearers: The past presidents and staff of Dallas Country Club.
