Obituary of Brouwer, Steven "Steve" Dale

STEVEN “STEVE” DALE BROUWER of Alvarado, Texas passed away surrounded by his family on February 19, 2016 after a short and aggressive battle with cancer. He is survived by his loving wife of twenty-three years, Jeannie Brouwer of Alvarado, Texas; his mother, Linda Harding of Tony, Wisconsin; his mother-in-law, Ingrid Jones of Carrollton, Texas; his children: Michael Koerner of Mesquite, Texas; Kristin and Christopher Gandy of Mesquite, Texas; his grandson Emmitt, his sister Annette Kromrey of  Independence, Wisconsin; his sister Kim Krueger (and Kasey) of Abbottsford, Wisconsin; his brother Tom Harding of Tony, Wisconsin; his brother Peter Brouwer (and Lauren) of Holbrook, Massachusetts; his sister Carol Brouwer of Holbrook, Massachusetts; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law Tonie and Mike Daly of Richardson, Texas; his sister Phyllis Faulkner (and Charles) of South Carolina;  his sister Jessica Morse of South Carolina; his brother Richard Harding, Jr. of Wisconsin; and his sister Sharon Harding of Wisconsin.  Steve leaves behind many nieces and nephews and other family members and friends in Texas, Wisconsin, Massachusetts and Germany. He was preceded in death by his grandparents Thomas and Dora Christie; his grandfather Samuel Brouwer; his grandparents John and Emily Dziengelski; his father Herman “Pete” Brouwer; and his stepfather Richard Harding, Sr. Upon first glance of his tall frame and ever-present cowboy hat, Steve gave off quite a formidable air, but those who were lucky enough to know him were rewarded with a smile and his signature sharp wit. For his friends and family, Steve's loyalty, support and generous spirit never wavered. He was born November 1, 1965 in Cook County, Chicago, Illinois, and moved to Wisconsin when he was two years old. After growing up in northern Wisconsin, Steve graduated in 1984 from Flambeau High School in Ladysmith.  Following in his stepfather's footsteps, he felt a duty to serve our country, and enlisted in the US Navy- a post he held proudly until 1990.  After he was honorably discharged, Steve moved to Texas.  He was fond of saying that while he wasn't born in Texas, he got here as soon as he could.  That same year, he met the love of his life, Jeannie. They began as friends,  but their chemistry couldn't be ignored, and within a few months they were dating.  Though the couple never had children together, Steve took great joy in helping to raise Michael and Kristin.  Throughout their time together, the Brouwer home was always full of people who needed a hand, animals who needed a home, and love to spare for all of them. Steve worked as an Electronics Technician for Fujitsu Systems, and spent the last eight years working for Halliburton. In 2014, the couple settled in their country home in Alvarado, Texas. By the time he kicked the bucket, Steve had crossed many things off his bucket list including: filling his marriage with love and laughter, becoming a grandfather, trekking annually to NASCAR with Gary, traveling the world, moving to the country and watching his family grow. He never missed a NASCAR race if he could help it, and loved the Dallas Cowboys, playing pool with friends, and reading a good western. He will be missed by all who knew him. Memorial Service will be on Saturday, February 27, 2016 at 11:00 am in the Brooks Family Chapel of the North Dallas Funeral Home, 2710 Valley View Lane, Farmers Branch, Texas 75234. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to Homes for our Troops (hfotusa.org), which builds new adaptive homes for wounded veterans, or StandUp2Cancer (standup2cancer.org). Please leave the family condolences and share memories on this website.

I will forever remember our wonderful times here at the lake. The pure simple joy of friends just being friends on the deck or for a boat ride a rude Chihuahua, WT Ruffner that could never be rude to Steve. You will always be in my heart and forever marked my spirit and soul. Thank you Steve for being my friend.

I will miss his laugh and his warm hugs. His quick wit was sometimes fun and sometimes caught me off guard. I am blessed to have known Steve and am so grateful he was in my sister’s life, he was good to her and for her.
