August 18, 1928 - March 14, 2016
Robert John Hinz, age 87, of Dallas passed away Monday, March 14th, 2016 at home with loved ones by his side. He is survived by his two children – daughter, Cynthia Ann Thompson (husband Tom) and son, Alan Dale (partner Art Ortega); granddaughters, Heather Ann Freire (husband Renato) and Victoria Lynn Thompson (fiancé Russell Colbert); great-grandchildren, Dominick Eugene Freire and Juliana Kelcyn Freire; sister Janice Agee; niece Teri Marsh (husband Jack); and nephews Rob Agee (wife Jane) and Gary Agee; great-niece Jennifer Lauren Agee; and great-nephews William Nolan Agee, Zachary Nolan Marsh, and Travis Carlton Marsh. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 57 years, Annis ‘Ann’ Amelia Bumpas Hinz.
Robert was born on August 18, 1928 in Rockford, Illinois. His early years were spent in the northern Illinois area before moving to Memphis, Tennessee in his early teens. He graduated from Memphis State College in 1951 with a Bachelor’s degree and joined the United States Army shortly thereafter. He left active duty in 1953, having achieved the rank of Corporal, and was on reserve duty until his honorable discharge in 1959.
He began traveling as an auditor for the Reynolds Aluminum Company soon after going on reserve duty, and it was during these travels that he met and eventually married the love of his life, Ann, in Florence, Alabama on August 21st, 1955. They moved to Huntsville, Alabama in 1959 where they raised their two children Cindy and Dale. In 1974 he moved the family to Coral Springs, Florida and finally to Austin, Texas in 1977, where he lived with Ann until her passing in 2012. His final move occurred in 2014 when he moved to Dallas to be near family.
Robert was an accountant and worked for several companies throughout his career including Brown Engineering, MRI, Systems Engineering Laboratories, ArtCarved, and Elkem Holloway. In later years, he obtained his CPA license and became a tax accountant for numerous individuals and small business owners. He was active in the Institute of Management Accountants (formerly National Association of Accountants) for over 50 years and was a past national vice president. The annual summer convention was often the center of family vacations and as a result, allowed Ann and Bob the proud distinction of having traveled to all 50 states in the USA.
He and Ann were active in church and sang in the choir with their son Dale for many years. After they both retired, Ann and Bob enjoyed traveling cross-country and also accomplished their dream trip, spending a month touring Australia and New Zealand for their 50th wedding anniversary.
Robert was an avid stamp collector and was very proud to show off his extensive collection whenever he had the chance. He also loved reading and opera.
Known as Robert, R.J., and Pop-Pop to his loved ones, and simply Bob to his many friends, he was a fun-loving, easy-going man with a big sense of humor. He was a wonderful husband, father, brother, father-in-law, uncle, great-uncle, grandfather, and great-grandfather who will be deeply missed by all.
