Obituary of
Sotny, Robert Jay
Robert Jay Sotny, 44, died on Thursday, April 28, 2016 at his home in Allen, Texas surrounded by his family and loved ones. He was born on February 19, 1972 in Parma, Ohio.
He is survived by his parents, Victor and Carol Sotny; children, Caitlin and Zachary Sotny of Allen, Texas; sister, Caryn Sotny; brother, Michael Sotny both of Plano, Texas; grandmother, Anastasia Sotny; aunt and cousins in Georgia and Colorado.
He was preceded in death by grandfather, John Sotny; and Heather West Sotny, the mother of Caitlin and Zachary.
Robert was a dedicated member of the MGTI team and Dallas MHRO family and an active volunteer in Mercer Cares, doing community service. During his 13+ years in various positions in the Information Technology departments of MGTI/MHRO, he earned the respect and friendship of many of his coworkers, both locally and globally. Robert attended the University of Texas at Austin, completed his Associate Degree at Collin College where he was a member of the National Honor Society. He was a Microsoft Certified Professional and completed the Southern Methodist School of Engineering of Applied Sciences, attaining his A+ Certification. He remained a close and loyal friend to his high school classmates and teammates, the Plano East HAWGS. As an Allen Sports Association coach, he was actively involved in his children’s baseball, softball, football, and basketball teams. He loved music and films, often using movie and TV dialogue quotes in humorous ways to brighten his conversations with family and friends. We will miss his sweet smile and booming laugh. He enjoyed reading, especially Stephen King novels, woodworking, cooking and vacation travels with his children. He was particularly skilled in various games and playing Poker, a talent that helped him to win a large jackpot on a birthday trip to Shreveport, LA. He was a devoted, loving and proud father, helping Caitlin and Zachary plan for a bright and successful future by always supporting and encouraging them to excel in their studies. They are his legacy. His dog, Sahara, brought him much joy.
The memorial service will be on Friday, May 13th at 11:00 a.m. at Chase Oaks Church, 201 Legacy Road (building 201, which is the youth activities building on the Legacy Campus), Plano, Texas 75023.
Memorial funds have been established for his children at GoFundMe: https://www.gofundme.com/robertsotny and

The family wants to express their deepest, sincerest appreciation to Nancy Vassallo, the Pickens family, the Medical Center of McKinney staff, the angels at New Century Hospice Care, Continuing Care nurses Ike and Ken, the Allen High School Lady Eagles, Robert’s friends and co-workers, and all of the Sotny family friends for their kindness, generosity and love.
Rob had several favorite quotes, but perhaps the most enduring was “The King has left the building”. Rob was our King and will be eternally missed. He was an honorable, dedicated, loving man.
Please leave the family condolences and share memories on this website.

My husband Frank worked with Robert at Marsh and let me know that Robert was ill. I had never forgotten meeting Robert for the first time at a company Christmas party quite a few years ago and being astonished and impressed by his breakdancing moves; I often asked about him since then. We both hoped that he would recover and were very saddened when he passed. Our sincere condolences to all his family and friends.

I am so sorry to hear the news of your family’s loss. I worked with Robert for several years at Mercer. He was always very kind, patient, and resourceful for those us of who were IT challenged. He will be fondly remembered for his wit, charm, and fancy dance moves at the company Christmas parties. My thoughts and prayers are with you all during this time.

I was saddened to hear of Robert’s passing. I worked with him for a number of years at Mercer and played softball with him on the company team. When he spoke about his kids, his face would just light up. You could tell how much he loved them. My thoughts and prayers are with all of his family during this time.

My condolences to the Sotny Family during this difficult time. Please know the faculty at FMS is here in any capacity for the Sotny kids. Both kids are truly amazing, a genuine reflection of great parenting. Rest in peace, Mr. Sotny.
