Styron, Charles Mark

Charles Mark Styron, 54, passed away on Monday, December 19, 2016 peacefully at home, surrounded by his family.

Born September 17, 1962 in Houston, Texas, Mark was the youngest of four children born to the late Charles and Billie Ann Styron. He attended Westbury High School in Houston (1981), earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Abilene Christian University (1985), and completed his Juris Doctorate at Texas Wesleyan University (2012).

During his childhood, he was adored by his three older sisters, and developed a strong work ethic at a young age. He learned team-building skills through playing football, and earliest work experiences included newspaper delivery, assisting his father with civil engineering surveys, and fence building.

Mark was humble in regard to his academic and professional achievements, and a man of honor and integrity. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and son, caring for his parents in their later years.  Throughout his life, he held strong to his Christian beliefs.  God and family were paramount.  He led by example to his children and friends.  The highlight of Mark’s life was the joy he received from his three children.

Mark held himself to the highest standards in both his personal and professional life. Following college, he was proud to serve as an Officer with the Dallas Police Department. In 1987, he became a Special Agent with the Drug Enforcement Administration, and worked at the Dallas Field Division for fourteen years. He became fluent in Spanish and completed Army Ranger School prior to a variety of overseas assignments, including Bolivia, Costa Rica, Belize, and Colombia where he worked as a Group Supervisor of the Heroin Task Force. After returning to Dallas in 2008, his career continued with positions as Group Supervisor for the High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA), Inspector with the Office of Professional Responsibility, and Assistant Special Agent in Charge (ASAC) at both the Dallas Field Division and later, Operational Commander of the HIDTA Task Force.

He will be remembered for his strength, integrity, intelligence, determination, attention to detail, as well as his wit, wisdom and compassion. Quitting was never an option for Mark, even when it came to battling his cancer. Mark had the ability to balance his commitments to family, friends and work, along with his pursuit of numerous personal interests including cycling, skiing, hiking, wood crafting, gardening, cooking, painting, traveling and reading. He touched many lives and was loved by all who knew him.

Mark was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his loving wife of 29 years, Christine, and three children; John, Alison, and Sydney.  He is also survived by his three sisters; Deborah Styron, Geri Rosendahl, and Kimberly Estes (Jay Scott); Aunt and Uncle, Nita and Bill Hrach, Pam Johnson; nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service to celebrate Mark’s life will be held at Prestoncrest Church of Christ, 6022 Preston Crest Lane, Dallas, Texas 75230 on Friday, January 6, 2017 at 10:30am.

1/6/2018: The memory of a year ago today brings sadness but yet joy. A year ago was Mark's memorial service. The sadness and loss is obvious. The joy is his memory and to know he is at rest with our Lord and Savior. Mark was a man of such integrity and wisdom that touched the lives of many. He was always willing to help others no matter what time of day. As his wife, I have met so many great people through his profession that I otherwise would not have met. The support our family has received over the past few years is tremendous. Specifically, in this past year so many have reached out to me to share their memories of Mark, tell me of their personal sadness and the absence they feel. Often times it is a phone call, a note of encouragement or a text like I received this morning from one of his co workers. This last year has been difficult but our church family, neighbors, work families and life long friends have been with our family every step of the way. So many ask about our three children and make themselves available to lend support.
Mark brought joy to all of in different ways and we all miss his dry sense of humor. He made the world a better place and certainly made me a better person. He was a great dad and always made time for his children and family.
It was a year ago our many friends came to Dallas for his memorial service. I know Mark will always be remembered as his name and fond memories come up so often in conversations. Mark will always be missed.

So very sorry for your loss and I grieve with you. Mark was an amazing person. He was my roommate at Abilene Christian University for a year. I remember to this day what a humble, dedicated, and strong believer in Jesus he was. He was also a groomsman in my wedding in 1985. May the Lord give all of you peace that passes understanding during this very, very difficult time.

My brother Police Officer, my DEA classmate and brother, my friend. Whenever I spoke with Mark or saw him, it was just like we spoke the day before. We are so lucky to have been with him over the years. Mark made us better. His Obituary is spot on. Mark and Honor are the same word. One thing missing was laughter and his humor. We laughed our fannies off alot. I miss Mark and always will. I hope to see Chris and the children soon up here in the Mitten state.

I met Mark at Camp Bandina in 1980, it was in the first year of my ministry in Alvin, and the kids there were having trouble accepting me since they loved the guy I replaced. Mark and the guys his age made the camp experience so outstanding that my youth group changed their view of me--really set my ministry on a good footing. I have such fond memories of that bunch of guys. Saddened at news of his passing, but grateful for the life Mark led.

Dear Styron family. Although I lost contact with Marl when he left for Abilene Christian, I had the honors of working with the church youth group when he was in high school. Mark had a fascinating sense of humor and a great determination to excell in EVERYTHING. He was admirable and I knew that he would go far in life. I see he succeeded . I know you all will miss him greatly. I will pray for your comfort in the days and weeks to come. May God bless you with comfort.
