Obituary of Brehm, Sonya Best

Sonya Best Brehm, aged 65, died peacefully on February 10, 2017 surrounded by her loved ones. Sonya was born July 1st, 1951, in Bryan’s Mill, TX  - a short distance from her hometown, Union Chapel. Her parents were Donald “Don” C. Best and Neysa Etta Allsup. Sonya enjoyed an idyllic childhood on the Allsup family farm with her sister Diana, making mud pies in the driveway, sneaking produce from the garden, jumping from the hayloft, being followed everywhere by her hen Penny, climbing trees and being chased out of the pasture by the bull, who then was pelted with meadow muffins (cow pies) for his impertinence. She was cared for and very deeply loved by her grandparents, Era May and Van Buren Allsup, whom she truly considered to be her parents. Sonya graduated Sunset High School located in Dallas TX in 1969, and the same year she was wed to James Russell Brehm and started a family: daughters Janese Rachelle, Sherry Jean, and son Craig Jay. She was active in Casa View Elementary PTA, known as the “cool mom” who made creative cookies and cupcakes for homeroom holiday parties and came to Mr. Thomas’ 3rd grade class during World Cultures week with her mother, both wearing dashikis and teaching his third-grade class a few words of Swahili. She parlayed her love of children and education into a job working at Casa View Elementary School as a teacher’s assistant helping with the Special Education Department, touching the lives of several of the special needs students with her bright smile and sunny personality. Later she joined the staff of the Texas Society of CPA’s where she became known as the “go-to gal” who was always willing to help with an issue, lend a hand, or share a smile and a laugh. Sonya was passionate about music, road trips, classic movies, hot air balloons, quilting, tie-dye, and life in general. She is survived by her mother, Neysa Best, her sister, Diana Best Clawson and her husband David Clawson along with their grand-daughters Taylor Mayes and Taren Clawson; son Craig Jay Brehm of Greenville, TX and his wife, Lisa Fontenot Brehm, daughters Sherry Brehm Petty of Savannah, TX and Janese Rachelle Brehm of Dallas, TX; grandchildren Indya Campbell, Joseph Petty, Bria Cabler Brehm, Brandon Brehm, and Hannah Petty, and a number of other relatives and close friends. Memorial Services will be at 6:00 pm on Tuesday, February 21, 2017  in the Brooks Family Chapel of the North Dallas Funeral Home, 2710  Valley View Lane, Farmers Branch, Texas 75234. Please leave the family condolences and share memories on this website.
