Obituary of Strickland, Anna Jean

Anna (Ann) Jean Strickland, 90, of Dallas, Texas, passed away Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at her home in Dallas due to natural causes.  She was born in Savoy, Texas, on April 23, 1926 to Bert Lois and Mae Pearl (Morgan) Strickland.  After moving with her family to Dallas, she attended schools in Dallas, graduating from North Dallas High School in 1944. Ann furthered her education at Southern Methodist University where she graduated with a BA in Education in 1948.  After graduation from SMU she began a long and honored teaching career with the Dallas Independent School District.  Although Ann never married or had any children of her own, she always talked about and loved the hundreds of children that she taught during her 40+ years of teaching.  Her final teaching assignment was at Everette Lee Degolyer Elementary in North Dallas. Ann had a love of Life and enjoyed traveling with her friends.  Summer vacations where always a time to explore new places and see wonderful things.  To her nephew, Tracy, and niece, Becky, she was always Ann but was fondly referred to as “Auntie” Ann.  She was the fun-loving aunt who was always doing fun things with them.  Just a big kid at heart, she took them on trips to Sandy Lake Amusement Park for swimming in the summer; out for ice cream at the DQ; or going to the movies on Saturday afternoon. Favorite movies like “Mary Poppins” and “The Sound of Music” were even better because of seeing them with “Auntie” Ann.  Even until the day she passed, it was a joy to hear the greeting “Hey Kiddo”, because you knew that “Auntie Ann” was there. She had a love for her church, Highland Baptist of Dallas, where she had been a member for 78 years, spending many of those years singing in the choir.  Ann also supported various groups and charities of her church whenever the need arose like welcoming new members, gathering food for the Dallas Food Bank, and giving and attending numerous wedding and baby showers. Ann was preceded in death by her father Bert, her mother Pearl and her brother Jack Strickland and his wife Nancy.  She is survived by her nephew Tracy Strickland and wife Kay of Farmers Branch, her niece Becky Strickland Jackson and husband Miles also of Farmers Branch, 5 great-nieces and 3 great-nephews, 10 great-great nieces and nephews. and cousins Pat Johnson of Richardson, TX and Fred Rolater of Murfreesboro, TN.  Ann will be dearly missed and remembered by her loving family and all the many people she touched in so many ways. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 4th, at 11:00 am at the Highland Baptist Church, 8202 Boedeker Drive, Dallas, Texas 75225. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her name to The Highland Baptist Church Christian Care Fund, c/o Highland Baptist Church, 8202 Boedeker Drive, Dallas, Texas 75225.  This particular fund was a passion of Ann’s because of her lifelong caring for those less fortunate than herself. Please leave the family condolences and share memories on this website.
