Obituary of Barber, Albert Carlton

Albert Carlton Barber of Rockdale, Texas passed away on Friday, February 24, 2017 at the age of 90.C Carlton was born on his family farm in Rockdale, Texas on January 18, 1927 where he spent the first 16 years of his life working the family farm and going to the local school, usually riding his donkey Christmas. He was a good student, graduating first in his class of 10 people, that won him his early release from the farm at age 16 and on to the University of Texas in Austin. At UT, he was a proud member of the Longhorn marching band. His college graduation was delayed 2 years when he was drafted into the Army where he proudly served his country during World War II. Following his discharge from the Army, he returned to the University where he graduated with honors in 1949. Immediately after graduation he began a 37-year career with Sears, Roebuck and Co, holding management positions that took him and his family to cities throughout the United States and finally as Credit Field Administrator for the Southern territory in Atlanta. Retiring in 1987, he and his wife returned to Dallas where his two children and two grandchildren lived. Carlton’s life in retirement was focused on his family and his church. He was a member of Lovers Lane United Methodist Church since 1963. He truly believed in the LLUMC’s mission to be a “church with a heart” and “every member a minister.” At LLUMC, he served on the Administrative Board, the Council on Ministries, was Chair of Congregational Care, Lay Hospital Visitor volunteer and participated in other volunteer activities. Carlton is preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Barbara (Pinky) Barber and son Jon Barber.   He is survived by his daughter, Barri Barber Tucker and her husband, Robert Tucker; grandchildren, Justin “J” Fain and Juli “Marie” Henley, Juli’s husband, Matt Henley and Carlton’s great grandson, Harper Henley. A Service celebrating Carlton’s life will be held Friday March 3, 2017 at 11:00 am in Shipp Chapel at Lovers Lane United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Doris Manning Benevolent Fund at Lovers Lane United Methodist Church. Please leave the family condolences and share memories on this website.
