Obituary of
Austin, Gary Lee
Gary Lee Austin, 58, of Dallas, Texas, collapsed in his home from complications related to cancer treatment. He was rushed to Dallas Medical Center, but was unable to be revived. He passed away the early morning of April 2, 2017.
Gary would not want his obituary or funeral to be sad, plain, or stuffy -- and he would want us to celebrate his life. He was his mother’s favorite and only son, a proud US Navy Veteran, an incredibly devoted husband, a father who gave all he had, and the most amazing PaPa. We were so blessed to have him in our lives every day. He was his family’s rock and hero. He embraced life and all of its challenges, mostly with sarcastic humor. He loved and cherished his family unconditionally, especially his mother, wife, and grandchildren – PaPa’s varmits. He was a die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan and Led Zeppelin was his band.
Gary is survived by his mother, Shirley Dunston Scanlon; wife, Kathleen Bonatti Austin and children, Ashley, Lauren, and Brandon; and his grandchildren, Anette “Nikki” Simmons and Tevin Blanton. He is also survived by many cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends.
Gary was preceded in death by his most beloved PaPa, Lester Coon; his Mamaw, Elouise Coon; and his father, Lloyd Austin.
The family will celebrate his life at visitation Thursday, April 13th from 5:30 – 7:30 pm at North Dallas Funeral Home, 2710 Valley View Lane, Dallas, TX 75234.
Graveside Services will be held Friday, April 14, 2017, at the DFW National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Pkwy, Dallas, TX 75211 @ 1:15 pm.

I just had him on my mind today. I was thinking that when I asked Kristian what he wanted to be he said a soldier. I asked him what kind of soldier. He said the kind that ride on boats like Uncle Gary!

Gary was one of the funniest people I knew! I was so proud to call him my best friend for almost 18 years! My family! My heart breaks for you Kathlene, his grand babies, his mom Shirley, and for the rest of his family! I pray that God gives each of you the strength to go through this and peace of heart knowing he is not suffering anymore. I know we will all miss him terribly. Kathleen, he loved you more than you know!! You were the world to him and he shined when he got to show off his grand babies!! He always told me he loved the way you loved him!

I am so sorry for your loss. Praying for peace and strength during such a sad time. I didn’t know Gary that well. I just know that he made my Aunt Kathy very happy and was a great grandfather to Nikki and Tevin. May he rest in peace knowing how loved he was by those in his life.
